We took a stand against our Clinical Instructor...

>>> Sorry - this is a big vent and may be very long!!

Today we took a stand against our clinical instructor (and now I'm a little worried).

Our CI is new to the school and new to the hospital. She was a last minute replacement, but claims she has 10 years teaching experience. We are half way into our rotation.

The earliest she has arrived was 15 minutes late - and that was on the first day. Since then, she insisted that we start clinicals 1 hour early (which put a strain on some of our schedules), and has been at least 30 minutes late every day.

When she does show up, she only has a list of patients on the floor. She does not check with the head nurse about who is getting discharged. She does not check the medication chart about what kinds of meds (and what time) the patient will get. She brings in her list and randomly assigns us a patient... AFTER we have already been waiting up to 45 minutes for her to show up! We usually do not hit the floor for 2-2.5 hours after our clinical started. Sometimes we end up with nothing to do (due to discharges and no meds to pass). She told us to bring our books to study, and to hide in the conference room:banghead:

There are other frustrations - wasting time talking endlessly about herself, her family, every health problem she has ever had, etc, etc...

Although I would not say she is mean to us, she can be condescending to some of the patients (behind their backs), primarily the overweight or mentally impaired.

Our professors that teach the theory part of the class are aware of the problems (heard it from the grapevine, I guess), but can't do anything about it. They have been supportive of us, and have given us some advice.

The official school policy is that a student must wait 10 minutes for an instructor to show up. Our professor said that certainly after 20 minutes we can assume they will be absent.

So.. today, we waited 20 minutes, then as a group, got up and left. We all went home. I really wanted to talk to her first (as a group) and then leave tomorrow if she is late again, but I agreed to go with the majority.

Now I am really worried. This woman will be writing our evaluations. I know she will be angry, and have no idea what will happen tomorrow. I think we have enough documentation to put administration on our side, but this could get really ugly.

Anyone ever had anything like this happen to them???

I've been waiting for an update on this one!

If this is truly school policy, and in writing, than I think you have a solid case. How can she contest a policy, especially when other faculty members have been made aware of this seemingly chronic problem. It would also be helpful if each case of tardiness was documented with dates and times.

I understand that communication between students and faculty often helps to ease issues when they arise, but why should the student be responsible for calling the instructor out when he/she is late before taking other actions following the school policy? The instructor is an adult (presumably), who is paid to fulfill a stated set of responsibilities to the cohort. Clearly this isn't happening and the punctuality issue is just one of many.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Maybe this may be wrong but...

If you leave do you have to make up the clinical hours on another day? We had our psych instructor give us an hour lunch, then the showed up 1.5 hours after the expected arrival time. She was always late inthe morning too. We would call the nursing school to find out what we should do. Try to keep in mind this is ONE clinical rotation of many. I have 3 days of clinical left in my program so speaking from experience, this too shall pass...

Wow...so I can't wait to see how this turns out. Personally, I would have stayed for the entire day whether the CI came or not. Of course, I would have dropped by the campus to let someone know immediately after finishing my "clinical day." I hope it turns out well for y'all because you are definitely getting hosed. This kind of behavior is totally unacceptable from a student, so when it comes from an instructor...well, I think someone should reconsider their choice to teach(or work for that matter since she can't seem to be punctual).

wow. somehow I don't see this turning out well for your group.

I do wish you the best though.

I hope you guys at least notified the clinical site that you wouldn't be there. It would be a shame for this to reflect badly on your school.

You guys should have asked for a representative from your school to come and witness the tardiness and let them handle it from there.

I hope it works out well for everyone.

Wow - I am amazed at the support you all have given!

This only happened yesterday, and we have our next clinical this afternoon. What I have been worried about is, if she is late again today, then what? (I'm not sure she will be able to figure it out) We all drive over to the school and try to speak with the dean is my guess.

One of us did let another nurse know what was going on. She is aware of the situation and encouraged us to go. Another of us was going to call the school and give them a heads-up. Our professor for the class wanted us to file a formal complaint with the dean last week, but we declined.

I feel like I'm living a soap opera as well. I'll update tonight!

I'm on pins and needles waiting to see what happened! Let us know!

I'm glad you all acted as a group. To have done this on one's own would have been academic suicide, but she can't really deny ALL of you!

WOW... the only thing I want to add is if you have to make up the hours, that will stink. Keep us informed.

Op said she's surprised about all the support. Hopefully, that is what you'll find here.

Gotta tell ya, though, I'm more surprised that you didn't hang out in the parking lot to make SURE that 'everyone' did leave. It would so not surprise me if one suck-up didn't just play along and then appear to be the 'dedicated' star pupil when the CI finally showed up.

Didn't they pull this trick on House last fall? It was a sneaky but effective way of getting rid of a few of the competition.

Now, that said, I am almost sure that no one did such a goofy thing.

Nursing school can be vicious. I was blown away by some of the antics I saw.

But you will make it through!

Best!!!

Gosh, I get the impression that your CI is lacking in competence, commitment or something... as one of the earlier posters commented, you are there to learn, and time is a precious commodity in school...a late clinical instructor is wasting away precious learning hours for you. It's always tricky to know the best way to handle a situation like this, but I do wish you the best and hope that the situation can be resolved.

I have to admit I was thinking this...that there may have been one student that would have stuck behind to "explain" what happened and then look like they were the only ones that were not convinced it was the right plan. One may have even driven back. I wasn't going to say it though but the reason I was thinking it is because I MAY have been one of those that went back... (sorry but my paranoia would have kicked in that everyone else would go back and i'd be the only one that left). :uhoh3:

As for HOUSE, I LOVE that show!! Is that one of the things I shouldn't admit when I start working at the hospital?? Will they make fun of me?
