Seniors - putting out feelers for jobs?

For those who are seniors this year ...

When will you start putting out feelers/networking for a job after graduation?

Any idea what area you'd like to work in? :)

Specializes in Women's Health.

I'd be interested in finding out too! I graduate May 2006 as well. And, unfortunately, (or fortunately I suppose) I will be movng away afterwards...so I really have no clue as to when I should start communicating w/potential hospitals. Sometimes I think I know what I want to do...but there are so many possibilities. I am interested in so many areas. I love critical care, but I also fell in love w/L & D over the summer during my externship. Hopefully in these last 2 semesters of school there will be some guidance from intructors on how to approach the job market. Manna, I see you're from Mississippi. I'm originally from West Tennessee. Will be going back w/my family after graduation. What part of Mississippi do you live in?

Specializes in ER.

People I have spoken with recommend starting to look around January or February. So, that's my plan for now.

I HAVE started to research different new grad programs the various hospitals offer, trying to get an idea for which one I might even be interested in working for.

As to what area I want to work in, I still don't know. :smackingf There are so many things I think I would like....I figure, whoever offers me the best hours, training, work environment, etc., that will be the type of nursing I start with. :chuckle

Specializes in Telemetry/Med Surg.

Haven't put out any feelers just yet. I'm still internally debating between Burn Nursing and working with the elderly in LTC or assisted living. Love the elderly folks.

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

A lot depends on having an idea of what you want to do with your nursing. I'm four months away from December graduation. Last week I interviewed and decided on accepting an offer that's in the works. It will provide me with a sign on bonus in time to relocate which is one less headache to worry about. I think the timing couldn't have been any better.

I live in central Mississippi - near Miss. State U. Plan on moving somewhere, still in the state (I owe the state $8,000 or 2 years of work as an RN - I'll take the work, thank you!) after graduation! :chuckle

Anyone have any ideas on what might be the best ways to start contacting nurse recruiters and saying, I'd be interested in a job at your facility in *name unit here* after graduation and asking them when they suggest to apply?

Just what you said is fine. Let them know when you anticipate graduation. What worked for me was contacting recruiters letting them know when I'd be in the area available to interview. I was asked what area of nursing I was interested in and an interview schedule was set up for me to meet with unit managers. It all worked out quite well without applying for a specific opening. Do have a resume prepared when you make your calls. It will probably be requested.

I tried applying for specific openings, with no response. It wasn't until I picked up the phone that things started happening.

Good luck to you!

Specializes in ED.

I've already started going to job fair or two and putting out resume's. I want most anything to do with peds including NICU. Not sure about psych though but I just love working with the kids and babies and even their families.

okay, which leads to another question...

Anyone got any resume-writing advice and/or helpful websites?

I'm pathetic with resumes, for sure! :)

*bump* :) :) :)

Specializes in Informatics.

I'm starting to look for a job over the winter break (December). The hospital I did my externship with over the summer does their externship/new grad fair right after Christmas, so that's my first shot.

As for resumes, I just made one using the template in Microsoft, and asked a few other people in the business world to critique it. Most schools have free seminars or resume critiques. Can you contact your counselors or career center?

Specializes in OB, lactation.

We are closing on a business Dec. 1 so I am going to hang out and see how that goes, I may be needed to work on that when graduation comes. But I live in a little town with 2 hospitals that are usually needing people in most departments. And with buying the business, we won't be moving any time soon. So no action for me any time soon. I also already know a few people in L&D in those 2 hospitals, so we'll see...

I guess I would probably start a couple of months out if I were in an area with a lot of choices or considering moving to a different area.
