Why do I get job alerts from so far away?

I have job alerts to be alerted to the jobs that are available in my area only. I am always getting job alerts from places over 100-200 plus miles away. I also get job alerts from other states. Why is it that when I specify that I am only interested in jobs in my area that I get these unwanted job alerts? Today I found a job alert that I thought I might be interested in only to learn that it is located 200 miles away.

Specializes in ICU, ER.

Maybe they are hoping you might relocate.

Specializes in Government.

I always wondered that too. One recruiter told me because I have a somewhat rare certification, I'm going to get job interest from all over the US. Not a week goes by I don't get a letter from some clinic in a far off state asking me to consider their facility.

I shred them. But there are worse things than someone showing an interest in me!

That's nice that you get letters from someone wanting you to consider their facility.;)

My problem here is that yes we have private duty local offices. They each tell you "Oh yes, we have plenty of private duty cases available for you right here in your own town. So you spend a bunch of money doing fingerprinting, and other required paperwork prior to hire. You get hired. Then after you waste your time and money you are told:

"We don't have any openings here in your area. We do have a private duty case for you and it's only 100 miles away. No we don't pay for mileage either."

PS. May I ask what your rare certification is in?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

The best is the job alerts for totally unrelated occupations such as automotive parts manager at Sears and a few other choice jobs. I've heard the same thing, "We thought you'd be great for the case in your town but we think you'll be better suited for the case in XX town (a million miles away) with only a per diem rate assuming that your visit lasts 20 minutes, no mileage, no travel pay."

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

If you are willing to relocate, then pursue the opportunity if it interests you. Otherwise, ignore them.

At the agency where I work at there is currently no private duty cases available in my particular area. None. It's OK for me because I already have a patient now in my area. Thank God. However, I feel sorry for the nurses who are looking for work. I wonder what they think when they see these "help wanted" nursing job ads every day. The ad states that they have many private duty nursing jobs in my area now. The fact is that they have none.
