Which matters more, school name or degree?

I'm considering either RN or BSN and not sure which matters more; where you go to school, or the fact that you HAVE the RN or BSN? I am thinking of applying to John's Hopkins, but it would require my family to move. Would it matter if I got my RN from there, or from my local community college? Do people hiring care about that at all? Does it matter more for the BSN, or not at all? Just wanted your opinions...thanks ;)

They generally care more about YOU than whether you have an ASN or BSN or where you got it from

Yes I agree. Do what you feel and what matters to you.

I would agree with Gomer. I am going to a no-name school that acts like it should be a "name" school. Go to the school. Talk to the professors, administration, but most of all STUDENTS.

Nursing school is hard, so make sure that the students are at least somewhat happy... that the instructors are experienced, and you feel like you will be in an environment that will prepare you to succeed.

Also, I live in MD and know a lot of people that went to Hopkins for nursing. They get the same nursing jobs that everyone else gets. In fact, I know quite a few nurses who dislike working with hopkins students because, in one nurses's words, "they think they are god's gift." IMO, it's not worth the expense.

Pick the school that is a good fit for you and an environment that will make you successful.

agreed. If you have your degree, your golden. i dont feel or have i ever ever seen that you are treated, paid or anything diff d/t where you went, what you got bsn/adn.

well what gets you the paycheck - the school name, or the actual certification? If you're debating between RN or BSN, it's always better to have the higher degree... but many start out with a two year ADN program and start working, then go onto a BSN program. If you have the option, go to the best school for you (best schedule, convenience for your family, etc). All that matters is that you have a degree, initially.

Some places do not mind you just having an RN degree, but according to what the nursing profession is coming to, they are requiring that you have a BSN, and most places specifiy that in their description

what really matters is the letters RN after your name .. i am a BSN and graduated from a good school , the only thing my work cares about is my RN ,,

That's true... and of the schools in my area (several ADN/diploma programs, and one BSN program at a pricey private university) the BSN students actually have a lower NCLEX pass rate!

Do they care what your score is on the NCLEX, or do they just care if you pass?
