Where are there Nursing Schools that aren't as Impacted as California?

Hello,

Wanted to know if anyone had advice or information on any Nursing Schools outside of California?

I have been an LVN for over 2 years and i wanted to attend an LVN to RN program. I live in San Jose, CA and every school i've looked into (DeAnza, Evergreen, San Jose State, SF State, etc.) is impacted. Private nursing schools like Unitek charge $39,000. I've finished all of my RN prerequisites.

Ive been asking around to other nurses, and counselors and they all tell me the same thing. "you just have to wait". I don't want to wait anymore. Im willing to move out of state to go to school, but just want to know if there are any other schools.

A lot of community colleges in Florida have LPN to RN bridge programs which would be way cheaper than a private program.

I am pretty sure Polk County community college has one as well.

Because of the terrible economy here, the rents are pretty reasonable these days (Central Florida - and probably everywhere else in Florida). You might want to call those programs and see if they have long waiting lists for the bridge programs. When I have checked in the past they didn't.

Call UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston). They are hiring like crazy to rebuild the staff in Galveston after Hurricane Ike shut down the hospital for a long time. UTMB does all the correctional facilities for the TDCJ (Texas state prisons), and they have their own nursing school. Call and ask what the benefits are...I know they pay for the school. Don't know if they make you wait for the program, or anything other than that. It is a good deal if you can get hired and in the bridge program. GOOD LUCK!

There's a private LPN-to-RN transition/bridge ADN program located in Oklahoma City. The only prerequisite is that you must possess a valid Oklahoma LPN license, which is fairly easy to obtain. All you'd need to do is endorse your California LVN licensure into Oklahoma. All of the classes are rolled into the program, such as the A&P, Micro, and so forth.

Is the private one in Oklahoma very expensive? Just curious. These days there is frequently a tradeoff between paying a lot of money to get in right away, and waiting forever to get into the cheaper programs.

Just a note to be careful and check the residency requirements. A lot of community colleges have in place some kind of provision that you can't register for certain programs (nursing, dental hygiene etc.) until you have been in-state for a year. I think this applies to Washington, not sure about Oregon. But I would make sure to check it out before you go...otherwise..it may take just as long as it would to stay here and finish the transition programs.

Very, very good point. The community colleges here in Florida require proof of residency and you have to live here for a year. Or you have to pay triple for every credit.

Might be the same with the tech programs.

The thing that makes these programs so appealing, though, is how cheap they are compared to the diploma mill schools.
