want to help an MA friend

My friend is an MA, she works in a dr's office now. Of course doesn't get payed much, the job sucks. The Dr acts like she's his little servant. She has worked for this dude for nearly 8 months, he can't see fit to give her a dollar /hr raise. She's saved his butt many a time, has covered his sorry butt when he can't see fit to show up to the office on time , etc... She want's a new job, are there any area's that any MA's have gone to besides Dr's offices. Seems most of those jobs suck. Low pay, long hours and little respect. She really isn't that interested in the pay, she just wants a job she likes. I've tried to get her into the ER that I work in as a PCA, but no luck there so far, seems an MA isn't what they want to hire. Seems she's over qualified for PCA and underqualified for anything else. But that's a different thread. I would just like to see her happy.

Well she makes about the same as a CNA , has more training than a CNA and was promised the buck raise after her 90 day probation prd. So yeh,,, I'd say she should have gotten the raise. She bends over backwards to do a good job and make the Dr look good.

Sounds like she should go into nursing. She's already used to the broken promises, hard work, low pay, and jerk doctors!:lol2:;)

LOL! I guess it's all a matter of perspective, right?! Considering that I haven't had a good paying job since I moved to Upstate NY from AZ, the salary an RN makes here would seem pretty good to me. But, my biggest fear is whether I am cut out to be a nurse .. . I guess I'll find out when I get my degree. Should know by March whether I have been accepted into nursing school for Fall 08 program! Hope I make it. I think you can find "jerks" no what what profession you choose to work in. Believe me --there are plenty of them in the legal arena too!

I moved from AZ to TX- my wages are much lower here. Where in AZ were you?

Oh wow, how ironic that you moved from AZ too. I lived in Northeast Phoenix around 7th St. and Union Hills. I graduated from Paradise Valley High School in 1977! Whew . . . telling my age! I took some college courses at PV community college.

moved to East Coast in 1999. Took me a very very long time to feel like East Coast was home. Sooo different out here in every aspect!

I'm originally from Tucson. I'm a travel nurse and finished a contract in Tempe this past summer.

i was supposed to graduate from HS in 1982, but didn't- I got a GED.

Specializes in Community Health, Med-Surg, Home Health.

I agree that she should obtain the CNA certification. I find that MAs are trained with more skills but have less options than a CNA, which is a shame. However, the physical labor of most CNAs is worst than her current job, but she will have more options regarding medical benefits and mobility. I witnessed some MAs function very efficiently and become the doctor's right hand if they are observant enough, but again, it will get her nowhere. I used some of my notes from MA school (not many, though, but significant ones) while in LPN school. It is nice for you to worry about your friend, and give her our regards and the best of luck!

I've met many MAs in Kaiser facilities and I've heard that Kaiser pays well. If your friend lives in an area that has Kaiser facilities she should try to get on there. Good luck to her. I really believe she ought to go into nursing to broaden her options and I also think that what you are doing to help her is commendable.
