Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everyone!

I'm a nurse wannabe, attending school next fall.

I'm curious what you "real, live" nurses think of such programs on tv as ER, Real Life Trauma, Maternity Ward, etc.

Are these show a help or hinderance to the profession?

Are they realistic?

Do you think they show a glamorized version of your work?

I'm very curious as to what you - the experts - think about this topic.

oh, but l.rae, i was talking about what happens on soap operas. you're talking about real life!! a physician? clean poop? i didn't go to school for 8 years, plus five years of residency, to be a caring human being!

I'm one of those rare people who loved Chicago Hope. Mandy Patinkin was outstanding - in fact, the whole cast when he was a regular on the show was outstanding. ER just didn't enthrall me as much as Chicago Hope.

Maybe it was because you had Mandy Patinkin, Mark Harmon, Hector (Elizondo?), Adam Arkin.. just all those powerful actors with such magnificent writers did it..

I have to admit, Mandy Patinkin is one of my favorite actors. He was great in the Princess Bride.

St. Elsewhere and China Beach were the best. I watch ER on a hit or miss schedule and it's okay but .... St. Elsewhere even had a problem with strong, nurse role models, as good as it was...

M.A.S.H....one of the only shows realistically portrayed nursing...Margaret knew how to put those docs in their place and hold her own....l like Becker's nurse too....l boycott the lame medical shows though.......LR

Did any of you watch Presidio Med last night? I hadn't seen it before and my mom told me it was good, so I watched it. Big mistake!! First of all, there was like one nurse on the show and guess what, her name was "nurse." I mean really, what doctor just calls you nurse? And if one did, how many of you wouldn't jump up and say "My NAME is ....."

Second, one of the doctors was talking to her burn patient who had a PCA. She actually said, "Yeah, no more waiting for nurses for thirty minutes to bring you pain medication."

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! I was actually going to bring this up! I was kinds watching this show last night, and when the doctor made that comment about "No more waiting 30 min for the nurse to bring you pain meds" I nearly threw something at the TV! I YELLED "OMG!" and hit the remote to change to "Law & Order" (which I wish I had watched instead). My Hubby & son nearly died laughing until they saw my face!! I was soooo mad! I am writing to that show! arrrrggghhhh And to top it all off, the doc who made the remark was a female. The show had been promo as a female show w strong female role models. HUH!

I guess it bugs me all the more because I am on my hospitals pain committee and used to work hospice. *IF* it takes us 30 min to obtain pain meds for a pt, it is USUALLY because the DOCTOR did NOT ORDER ANY!!!! And then when we call the doc, he hems and haws about what to give, how much, etc., and ends up ordering Demerol 12.5 mg (For BONE METS???? Are you

NUTS???)

I love "ER" even tho it is not always realistic....it is fun to look at the cutie docs. I like "Scrubs" too because it has a lot of sharp humor that reminds me a little of "M.A.S.H." which was the BEST. Used to also watch "St. Elsewhere", but I was not a nurse back then and can't really say if it was realistic or not.

Hey Pappy....I remember Marcus Welby too. And how about "Dr. Kildare" and What was the one with Vince Edwards in it?

LasVegas honey...you rock!!!

I liked "JohnQ" up until that kid talked w the tube in, also!!!! I nearly died laughing! OMG!!!!

Another golden moment on Presidio Med last night--after Dana Delaney and Oded Fehr (slurp! :) ) had a VERY indiscreet conversation right in front of the nurses' station about their extramarital affair, Dana Delany turned around to the understandably wide-eyed nurse and snapped, "Don't you have work to do?"

Grr! Yeah, don't you have other men who aren't your husband to do? B-tch.

Especially galling because Dana Delany used to play the lead role--Colleen McMurphy, a strong nurse--in China Beach.

ok my next task is to learn how to just pick up part of a quote. The show with Vince Edwards was Ben Casey.

I love ER and I loved Chicago Hope, as I did MASH.

But only a nurse can get so angry watching these shows and still wants to watch them again because of all the good looking doctors.

Be honest, who has got a Luca, or a Hawkeye or Adam on his ward?

Keep on Dr. Pawlow! Renee

Well, actually... we do have a few hotties. :chair: :p

Heather

As a current nursing student who hasn't yet experienced clinicals, I have to say that I am a medical drama "junkie". Real or not.

I faithfully watch ER, and now Presidio Med. I was a huge fan of Chicago Hope in the early days, but the last year or so, after they "fired" all the doctors and brought Mandy back lost my interest. (I even remember Emergency...I was "in love" with those 2!!)

I think out of all the ones I watched, ER at least had a consistent group of nurses portrayed every week with Carol and some of the others. But I do agree that Presidio doesn't have any.

The one thing that Always drives me crazy on these shows is the labor/delivery sequences. Man, give us ALL a break, nurse or not, we all know it doesn't happen THAT way....or that fast!

Also....what is Baby Story? I don't have cable...

I'm sorry, but Randolph Mantooth was a hottie back in the day.
