Travel Distance to Work

I'm a new grad and currently seeking employment. A lot of the hospitals around where I live do not seem to be hiring new grads, so I just wanted to know how far away is your place of employment from your home. I'm asking because what if I happen to get a 12 hr. overnight shift... how far is too far when it comes to driving after a long day/night of work?

I think it depends on you. I don't mind driving, its about the only time I have to just chill and listen to the radio, lol. I've done 90 minutes each way. Good luck in your job hunt.

I'm grateful now to be working 3 miles from home, but have driven 30-45 minutes to most of my previous jobs.

If you're going to be working nights, I really wouldn't recommend a lengthy drive at all. I used to fall asleep when I had a 35-40 min drive into the sun in the morning. When I moved to the city and had a 7 minute drive home, I STILL fell asleep. Hmm, maybe the moral of the story is don't work nights. (Kidding!)

I'm about 40 miles, I've been straight nights about 7 years so I don't usually have a problem. I know every now and then I need to pull over for a while but 95% of the time it's no problem. Good Luck.

It depends. Most of the time my jobs have been less than 30 min. from home. However, I did have one job that was 1 hr ea way, but since it was 3 12's it wasn't horrible! & yes, they were night shifts.

farthest i've ever traveled is an hour each way, but my sister who lives in northern california routinely commutes 2.5 hours. luckily now she can take bart. i have friends who travel 4-6 hours each way -- for night shift. they either rent a room near the hospital and stay overnight, stay with a co-worker or stay in an rv. one guy i knew routinely slept in his car between his three shifts, but i wouldn't recommend that. (have you read the thread about how to tell someone they smell bad?)
