There are guidelines, such as working every other weekend.
We have self-scheduling......to a point. People know that if a shift isn't covered management has a right to adjust what people sign up for to cover staffing needs.
We have a sign up sheet where we fill in the days we'd like to work. For the most part over the years, it worked very well for me. Because I only wanted to work 2 12's in a row and have some days off in between, and I needed every Mon. and Tues. off. rarely did I not get what I signed up for. Of course it's all moot for me now as I work 8 hour shifts Mon-Fri.
Good luck.
We do online self scheduling ..... you just put your schedule in for the month. You can see how many people are on each day, so you have a pretty good idea if you'll be moved or not (i.e. if you schedule yourself a day that is heavy with people, then you have a chance of being moved onto a day that is shorter).
It works out great for us, I usually always get what I sign up for ...... every once in a while they switch a day here and there, but not very often.
we started self-scheduling quite a few months ago and i love it. i was weary at first, but it's worked out great. here is how ours works:
we are broken up into three groups (depending on your pre-scheduled weekend) and then all three groups take turns signing up first, second, or third. for example, group a signs up first. they get 1 week to make up their schedule (on-line). then group b, then c. then the next schedule, group b signs up first, then c, then a.
We have it at the hospital, but then the scheduler gets a hold of it after you've signed up and screws everything up. I'm constantly running to my unit manager to fix it because the scheduler can't seem to buy a clue that I have to work daylight MTW because of class and clinicals on those nights. I usually get every other Monday off since I've worked 3-11 over my non clinical weekend, then daylight T, W, 3-11 Thurs, Friday and my weekends to work. At least that is how I schedule myself... and usually wind up having to have something changed. I even gave the scheduler a copy of my school schedule, but she still can't seem to get it right. At least my unit director is pretty cool about giving me pretty much what I need.
