RN tax deductions 2015

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am filing taxes as a nurse for the first time this year and since tax time is quickly approaching I am wondering if anyone can provide input on what can be deducted. I have an idea of the basics but I also know there are things that we tend to forget about. Any input is appreciated.

You really need to consult with a CPA or tax professional. What I might be able to deduct may not be relevant to your situation. There are lists & guidelines on the IRS website also.

Please tell me where you found these lists! While it is easy to say, "go look here" or "consult a professional" I was looking more for what other RN's claim such as -gas to and from CEU's, -internet, etc. Things that we don't think about that wouldn't be on some generic list provided by a government that is in the business of making money. Thanks for your reply. I'll ask around at work and post if anyone else is interested.

Internet is difficult to claim as it must only be work related and no personal use. Gas to ceu's is a difficult claim. Easier items are scrubs and work only shoes (sneakers that you use outside work are not) as you can only use them for work. License renewal (initial license is not) costs. Personal . Certain work only equipment that is necessary and reasonable.

Plus you must have a certain dollar amount that is within a percentage of your income. Driving miles to/from work are not deductible.

Equipment not required by your employer is not deductible. Such as employer provides pulse-ox & BP cuff but you decide to buy your own you can't deduct the cost.

I found I made way too much to deduct work expenses.

@JustBeachyNurse, all the above information was helpful. Thank you!

I am reviewing the links you provided. Claiming the expenses I paid to take my NCLEX exam is not something that I would have thought of claiming and is exactly the reason I posted this in an allnurses forum. This is precisely what I was looking for. Thank you again1

NCLEX expenses are NOT deductible as it's the entry to practice/change of career cost just like your initial license fee is not. But your renewal license fee and ceu's will be.
