Refresher courses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi,

I graduated nursing school in 2011 and past the California NCLEX exam. I worked in home health after nursing school for one year but after I got pregnant with my third, I stopped working. I have kept my license active

and have been volunteering once a week at a pregnancy clinic. I now have 5 kids and my youngest in almost two and now I'm ready find a nursing position. The problem is that I'm no longer considered a new grad( only new grad for two years after passing NCLEX) and I have not had at least a year in acute experience, like a hospital setting. So I am pretty unhireable. We are probably moving to Texas over the summer and I'm wanting to take an RN fresher course so I can find a job when we move. After completing an RN refresher course, will it still be hard to get hired? When you graduate from a refresher course do you get new grad status again? Should I take a refresher course in California before we move or wait to get to Texas? I was hoping to get a job there before we moved. My husband wants to start seminary there and I will be providing most of the income at that time. Does anyone know if there are online refresher courses so I can start them now instead of waiting for the Fall? Thank you so much for your help!

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Your new grad days are long over, so forget about getting any type of residency.

A refresher class in TX wil give you a foot in someone's door I would think. But don't be surprised if even a refresher course doesn't get you an acute care job. Look far and wide for a job and take what you.can get. Build from there.

Specializes in Private Duty Pediatrics.

You've had 5 kids in 5 years (or maybe you adopted?), you're moving, your husband is starting school, and you have to find a job after being out of nursing for about 4 years? I hope you're moving to be near family, because I don't see how you will be able to afford childcare.

I would take the refresher course in the state where you'll be living, and look for private duty home nursing, night shift. Private duty, because you have experience there, and nights because you & your husband are probably going to have to do work/school in opposite shifts to keep childcare costs down.

Google " PHES"..... A very good nursing refresher course, & affordable.....Yvette is the Director of the program.....it can include a clinical component.....not only does the clinical component, fine tune your skills.....it is a great way to market yourself,,,,,

Best wishes

And if you are not doing the refresher course for "displine " reasons, the majority of the course can be done with DVDs.....feedback, and rationales....Yvette helps find appropriate clinical sites.....for the hands on component, I can not stress enough how important the opportunity to market yourself....

Even better wishes...

Do you know if there are any good refresher courses in the Dallas Forte Worth area? Maybe online? I would love to start it now and not have to wait till the Fall.

I got pregnant with my first in nursing school and was pregnant with my second when I graduated. It was hard for me to get a job because I was pregnant. I got the home health job and worked for a year. Honestly, home health is scary when you don't have hospital experience. I would love to do labor and delivery.
