question about hiring?

HI!

Just had a question about the hiring process, When you get hired, do you tell/ask what dept. you want to work in or do they just tell you? or do you bounce around from dept 2 dept (if your not specialized)

Typically you will interview for a specific position, for example, ED RN. In that case, you will work only in the ED unless asked to float. This would definitely be a question for your interviewer if you are not clear about where you will be working. If hired on as float pool, you will float to anywhere in the hospital that you are qualified to work.

In both cases, the HR person told me what was available and where I would like to interview. I then interviewed with those nurse managers and waited for a offer. One hospital though was hiring for floats, but they told you upfront that is was a float posistion.

Remember that the interview is also for you to ask questions. And you can always ask to shadow someone if you want to learn more about what they do on a daily basis.

So, do you think they would let me shadow a CRNA as an LPN?

Possibly. If that is a path you are looking at. ..doesn't hurt to ask.

I doubt the hospital would let an lpn shadow a crna "on the clock". It's not a position they're looking to hire you for, so I would suggest discussing areas where you are interested in working at your current level.

Most people end up interviewing for, and taking jobs in, departments that are hiring versus their "dream" department. You have to be open to all kinds of employment in the beginning, with the hopes of transferring later on if you feel you need to make the change.

I knew I eventually wanted to be in the ER, but thought I would start out on a tele floor and told the recruiter at the hospital where I'm currently working as such. However, the recruiter decided that I should just interview in the ER initially. I did and was hired on the spot. I'm very glad it worked out that way.

Thats cool! hope im as lucky! Would you/have you worked in a clinic? is it better or worse than a hospital? just wondering, because im not sure what i wanna do yet. i have a few ideas but really want to just see what im good at and go with that. The aera's that im thinking are peds or something in women's health like ob, (but not L&D)
