Pure worthless crap

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was pondering my carrer as a nursing student ,how much was worth while and how much was crap.

My clinical experience in school was really worth while, but learning therapeutic communication was pure crap.

How about you, what did you learn that was really worthwhile in nursing school, the things that helped you in the real world, and what was pure crap and a waste of time?

It's changed. I used to think exactly what you do. Now, I've had a few years and already things have changed so much clinically that I think the therapeutic crap was worthwhile because I still use it every single day. Deesalation theory and family theory also helped. I never ever thought I would say that....

I find theraputic communication very usesful. Infact did you know that in courses and seminars and books on communication in general (not nurseing) they teach the same things? The probem is so few people understand or practice this. It is a skill not a theroy. So to really learn it one must practice. With practice over time you become more effective using it.

All the Community nursing stuff was Crap, for me. (4 yr BN program) It was taught in such a way that instructors created a perceived division between Community nurses and Hospital nurses.... and the "community" instructors were very condescending and biased against hospital people. We had a few clinicals that were a pure waste of time, because they couldn't find appropriate clinical placements for us doing anything like what real community nurses do, either. None of the theory was taught in such a way that I could apply it to my basic "nursing" knowledge for later, when I knew I would work in hospital acute care settings. Still makes me mad!

Waste of time, also a waste of money - those university courses and the fancy books were expensive!

What I hear you saying is that Therapeutic Communication is pure. . . feces. . . .

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

Therapeutic communication does take a bit of practice. Still working on it! :)

Cheers!

In regards to therapeutic communication "Tell me more about it" "Would you like to talk about it?"

Nursing school was lame, lame, lame. If I hadn't been required to complete 3 semesters of co-op, I wouldn't have had the vaguest idea what nurses actually do. The nurses (and the UAPs) at the hospital where I worked taught me everything I know.

The therapeutic communication stuff was OK, somewhat useful, but I seem to recall instructors going on and on about this topic, and many others, as though it were some extremely complex topic. Give me a break. I'll stop now.

Ahhh. . . but don't forget that, "What I hear you say. . . . " bit. I've actually caught myself saying that bit for clarification purposes.

Cheers to you! :)

Have to admit, while in school, thought most the classes were piles of dung.

Now out of school, I am always signing up for communication classes and seminars... if it's not the patients, then families or staff members... it seems 80% or more some days is based on communication.

The other 20% is trying to find the time to do so LOL!!!!

nursing school does cover alot of BS. You will learn much more in your orientation about nursing than you ever learned in school. I feel that the degree required does make a more rounded person

but I have to agree, today technical skills and all that, half the battle if communication today with everybody....the patient, the families, the docs, coworkers, just everybody............

well some of the practice lines in the whole communication lesson left a lot to be desired

the idea of communicating effectively should have been the point . At the time I thought a lot of the things I was "learning" were never going to do me any good in my nursing practice, shockingly enough they have...

doesnt matter how many techincal skills you have , you could insert a foley with your baby toe and people will still not trust or respect you fully if you cannot communicate properly.......
