Paxil/Oxycotin?

Ok slight dilemma. Anyone know of side effects (more emotional than physical) on paxil mixed with oxycotin? Just wondering ... could this cause moodiness and irrationality? Anyone heard of that with stronger pain meds?

I have known several CA patients that have taken both. Never seen that kind of side effect. Could there be some kind of underlying pathophysiology?

Well...I don't know about them together, but I do know that when my DH was put on Paxil, he turned into a mean old grouch. It was AWFUL. I told him to flush that stuff down the toilet because he was worse on it than off. He improved greatly after stopping it.

But remember you can not STOP Paxil abruptly, it must be gradually reduced over an extended amount of time.

Well, my DH stopped it abruptly--he was on a very low dose anyway, so I'm not sure how much tapering off would have been necessary. He had only been on it about 5 weeks when I had all I could stand of his awfulness--and he felt a lot better after he got off it. He said he didn't realize how bad it made him feel until he stopped taking it.

I'd think it would make you really tired??

Don't know about mixing but here's my experiences: DH took Paxil and turned evil. Quit taking it and returned to "normal." Brother took Oxycontin (2 20 mg tabs bid) for his hips (avascular necrosis) and came off it two weeks ago right after his first total hip. Right after the surgery, he was still taking it only he was over-medicated. Due to the surgery, the 80mg/day was no longer needed and he was a grumpy, irritable, sometimes bordering on violent jerk. Prior to the surgery, he was fine when taking the Oxycontin. You didn't notice the personality change.

For whatever it's worth....

5 yrs on 20mg Paxil qd. Had a L THR (my second) w/o so much as an aspirin and tripped over the walker two days post op, fx R tib/fib. I thought I was going to die, or pretty much wished I would have. Took Oxycontin 40 mg tid x 2 weeks. Really saw no weirdo behaviors in myself. Just asked DH what he thought and he said he saw no change in my behavior either. Paxil saved my life (or at least my marriage) when I started taking it. Prior to it I was a classic BI***. I still can be one, but at least I know when I am.

When I had my total knee I was taking Paxil and Oxy together. It didn't cause any problems and my DH liked me being so mellow on the medications. He said that he could live with me this way for a long time :D But of course he has seen me in my best and my worse.

Just something to consider...

patients who are on antidepressants for initial dx of depression and actually become worse with sx of "moodiness, irritability" should be evaluated for bipolar disorder...
