Nurses General Nursing

Published

I understand burnout and all but at the same time I find more and more nurses who are at work to put in their time.

I started out seven years ago and all I want to do is give great care and have fun doing it.

I also know from the real view that healthcare is getting harder due to the shift in management and the financial drive but, the thing is.................................................................

WE ARE NURSES AND WE NEED TO FIND THE COMMON THREAD AND GRASP IT TIGHT,IT DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ARE A NEW GRAD OR A SEASONED VETERAN ,AN LPN/LVN.RN.ARN,BSN, MSN SO LET US GET IT TOGETHER AND GIVE THE WORLD A WAKE UP CALL.

WE ARE NURSES

Oppsssssssss so I guess i just get tired like any one else but when you sign on for this ride give it your all.

Now then let finish by saying that there are alot of nurses out there who are passionate and care to the extreme so if you are among that legion please do not let the others who are fewer drag you down and turn you out.

We need one another as nurses and people.

Thanks for allowing me to vent

Hmmmm....... Sounds like you got some issues with your colleageues.

Nurses who just put in thier time - if this is rife it can be a local cultural phenomena - look around -it might be time for a move.

I have worked w/ nurses like that and it is sad...I used to work in LTC .. but I just could not do it anymore...I was getting burnt-out very fast and very depressed... I am back w/ my 1st love... Home health... I enjoy it so much...and I don't dread going in "to work"!!

Give great care while having fun? Can I get that on a t-shirt? That's my philosophy,too...I I am now in LTC and I believe that as a GUEST in the resident's HOME I should be friendly,courteous-and I do have a sense of humor.I am not in the business of rehab-but just trying to assure some quality of life on a secure dementia unit..Sadly many of my co-workers and some administration do not...I also had the same approach in acute and home care-never a problem...My current DON and one of her side kicks seem to feel that "professionalism" is paramount-and that means no laughing,joking-etc...I think I'll put zoloft in the water....

"Give great care while having fun" OBillyBoy - I think you've got it.

As a new grad, I think that is my philosophy. I hope to meet some great RNs out there that still like to have fun and do their job well.

The worst thing that a nursing home administrator can do is hire a nurse who has only worked in a hospital and had no idea how to deal with people. No idea how to work with the elderly or the staff. Residents do not like to have people in their home who do not know how to laugh and joke with them. I know I do not want anyone in my home who does not know how to laugh.

I think they are confused about profesionalism. I bet if I looked it up in the dictionary it would not say: taking yourself too seriously, lack of fun, lack of humor, lack of laughter.

Sounds like they might be thinking of something more like I don't know, maybe POMPUS?

Thanks for the pep talk.

I have to admit after a dozen years sometimes I'm just putting in my time. But for the most part I haven't lost track of why I do what I do. Perhaps some of the others you speak of are in the process too.

Last night I realized that all It takes is one to start the change let your passion flow, sooner or later it has to catch on.

ABOVE ALL............ALWAYS HOLD TRUE TO WHAT IS IN YOUR HEART THE MASS MANAGED CARE SOCIETY CAN NOT AND WILL NOT SEE ME HANG MY HEAD.

So paste on the smile get the jokes ready and arm yourself with a number of 10cc saline flushes, a roll of silk tape,a sharpie and always have a glove or two on hand for makeing a ballon head.

Lets do this for us and our patients........

Just keep it steadyand between the lines.....We will go far............................................................................

:chuckle

OBillyboy - Thank you for the inspiring words. No, I am not a nurse YET, but I WILL use that philosophy when I start working in LTC. See, I too believe that one person can make a difference.

Thanks -

This is a great thread-maybe you have started something,obillyboy...Sort of a Pay it Forward kind of thing..Maybe our positive energy will rub off on some of our co-workers? I have had more then one nurse say to me" I wish I had some of what you are on" because I smile and joke with my patients and really enjoy interacting with them-and treat them like PEOPLE....We need a RIBBON! What color should we wear? What should we call this movement?
