Ovarian Drilling

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of or undergone the procedure of ovarian diathermy aka "ovarian drilling". I am considering this procedure as treatment for PCOS, but wanted to get the opinion of my fellow medical professionals on the subject. Any info is much appreciated.

I don't know that much about it myself, but there are a couple discussion boards where I have gotten some good information:

I am considering it myself as several of my friends have had successful procedures done. However, I don't know if I can afford the recovery time... I think it is a little lengthy for someone with two small kids.

hi~

i, too, have pcos. the doctor i have selected to do my ivf doesn't like to do the ovarian drilling. he feels it may cause over stimulation, in my case anyway. my pcos is severe, ttc for 4 years. i will only be using birth control for the first 2-3 months before the actual procedure.

now on the other hand when i was only doing iui's i had the ovarian drilling. without much success... obviously, leading to me needing ivf. recovery was okay. but i also have a high pain tolerance and high hopes of getting pregnant. and hope alone can make anything better. please feel free to ask me any questions.

Did the ovarian drilling make your periods more regular? That is one of the reasons I am considering the procedure as well as ttc. I pretty well stopped having periods (maybe every few months) and want them to be more regular. My husband and I have been trying for about a year now and started one cycle of IUI but dr cancelled the cycle and suggested IVF but we are trying other less expensive means first. I haven't talked to my OBGYN about it yet just trying to get some basic info on it first. I appreciate the info.

It did for a while, maybe 6 months but that was it. The best thing had started my ovulation/periods was a combo of Clomid (100mg BID) and Glucophage (750 TID). That worked pretty well. THe ovarian drilling was just going on hope, didn't work though. Oh well, we now KNow IVF is our only option and that's okay with us. Good Luck and don't let your dr push you into doing IVF.

Thank you for the info. I have another question if you don't mind...Did you have the ovarian drilling procedure done more than once?

I had this procedure a couple of years ago. I'm so happy that I did!

Just once. I go to see my infertility dr on Monday in hopes to start meds to get my body ready for my 1st round of IVF... hopefully in December! Let me know how your procedure goes if you decide to do it. I figure, It couldn't hurt to try

GOOD LUCK and keep us posted :yeah:

Thanks to all for the info and good luck, Lovablevn, on your first round of IVF!!
