Things people say coming out of anaesthetic
Since I have been put under quite a few times here are my favorites: *Mosty recently, "It tasted like bubble gum." several times... refering to the numbing spray for my TEE. * Tell the old man to stop farting * I "want" Matt Lauer (from Today Show) * I will punch that nurse in the face when she comes back in here * I missed the G-D presidental debate. Why did he take so long? ( Was in surgery 7.5 hours that time) Of course you don't ever remember but it's always funny.

lactation educator/counselor
i want to say how sorry i am that your sister is so upset. i don't know what her friend told her, but imho, it sounded like jealousy... now to get to the lactation consultant, in my hospital you have to be a licensed person to be a lactation consultant. and our lc's go through way more than a week of training. heck, just us floor staff go through 4 days every 6 months. and our lc's don't make much more than their regular rn or lvn pay. good luck to your sister and tell her to stick with the program... it will pay off in the long run for her.

Each job title wears it's own color.
We do this~ RN- White or Green LVN- Tan PCA- Blue if you work mother baby/L&D/nursery (as I do) all nurses and PCA have to wear either pink or blue. We don't wear colors to set us apart in the patients eyes... we do it because a few years ago a Dr. gave orders to a housekeeper. That is also the time we stopped taking verbal orders. :smackingf

What's the best gift from a patient?
I agree with the other posters. I heartfelt Thank You is all I could ever ask for. :redpinkhe But one of the neatest gifts I ever recieved was a package of Forget-me-not seeds. She said I made her feel as if she was my only patient and never forgot about her.:heartbeat That really meant alot to me. Something unique I thought.

Math Test Part of Job Interview
i went to a job interview last week and had to do 25 math questions. without warning that is... blah. anyway they gave me about 5 minutes to go over a "study guide" then had an unlimited time to take the test. i had alot of iv question and reconsitution questions. we had to pass with an 80, if not then we got 1 more chance to take it again. after that we were passed up for the job. we could only reapply after 30 days and taking another test with 50 questions (made mostly of the ones you missed) and you have to pass with a 90 on the first try or thats it.. i think it has alot to do to with where you are in the country and what position you are applying for. good luck, i wish you all the best!!

Important Decision for a New RN!
i couldn't agree more. i just interviewed with postpartum and another hospital. i really wanted the pp job so when i went to the other interview i asked to have a few days to think about it. they offered for me to shadow. before i got home the pp nurse manager called to offer the job. she said my thank you was the first one she had recieved ever and it made a huge impression on her. anyway, the moral of the story is... that it never hurts to ask. what are they gonna say? no?... well ok then it may not be the job for you and you can cont to look elsewhere. good luck!

Depressed about oreintation schedule
congrats on the new job and being a new nurse!!! i just got a job on postpartum. i will also be working 12 hr nightshift. from what my nurse manager told me today. i will be doing 5 days of 8-5 orientation. the first 2 days is a general hospital and jacho oreintation and the next 3 days is almost a "shadow" the day shift orientation. i will then start my normal 12hr schedule. i, imho, think that is absoutley worth the 5 day 8-5 orientation to get this job... or in your case in the nicu. like you said that is not an easy job to land. i am sure they couldn't have you do orientation that long with the 8-5 business. i mean really, what all could you learn that would apply to your schedule? i hope its only a week thing and you can get through it. good luck!!!

Brand New LPN starting on postpartum floor
Hi Everyone~ I am very excited to find out (yesterday) that I landed my DREAM job on PP. I will be working nights. I was wondering if anyone had advice or could let me in on what NOC nurses do on PP. I am ready for the challenge. I start all the classes in 2 weeks and am totally ready. Thanks for any advice... either on working nights or PP. :redbeathe

Scored Inteview on Postpartum Floor. Tips Pls!!
Congrats on the interview!!1 I just found out yesterday I was hired for night PostPartum position. I had 3 interviews. 1 with HR, 1 with Nurse Manager, then with Peers. HR asked all the basic questions : Work ethic, strengths, weakness, how do you hand complaints... same ol'' With nurse manager, her and I really hit if off. It felt like we knew each other for years. She was super sweet so we mostly just talked and got acquainted with each other. The 4 quetions she asked was: How do you handle complaints (again) Hardest situation you got yourself into and how did you get out, What does it mean to be a team player and give a situation where you worked as a team, How do you handle stress With peer interview it was mostly the same questions. Again we just got acquainted and luckily I really fit in w\ the nurses. Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Against vaccines:
Congrats on deciding on nursing! But maybe I just have a different job, but I have been a LVN since 2005 and have never been required to have vaccinations. Before nursing school I had to have the Hep B series (but had those in high school) and have to have TB test every year but never any vaccines. Maybe I am missing something... But I am TERRIFIED of recieving shots, lab or anything done that requires me to have something sharp under my skin but it is really all worth it. Good Luck! I hope someone else can fill us in on required vaccines if there are any.

HELP!! Interview with peers for L&D
i just went on a peer interview the other day. suprisingly all they wanted to know was personal questions. very few work related questions. alot of the question were like: what are 5 personal goals in the next 5 years? who do you trust the most? how does your family handle stress? how will this job affect your life at home? how long have you known your best friend, also #1 personal reference? some work related questions like: what do you plan to accomplish in this position? how do your personal goals affect your job performance? good luck~ stay confident and know you are a nurse for a good reason!

random drug tests?
Not a scare tactic~ My friend, who is a CNA in a hospital, was pulled along with 5 other for random drug test. Tested positive for marijuana. She had to take one-on-one councling and group therapy/rehab for 4 months (at the hospitals expense) Next time suspension for a month w/o pay then of course being fired. That was 5 yrs ago and no more positive drug test!

Becoming a medication aide??
My main concern with med aides~ and I don't know if anyone will agree with me, but this was a general worry at my previous job~ that a med aide takes a 3 month class, sometimes less, and are gave the right to medicate people without knowing the rules for the drug. ie.. giving a BP med but they usually don't check the BP or pulse. Or they are quick to give a prn anti-anxiety med to an "unruly" Alzheimer's pt (which is a personal pet peeve of mine)... just small stuff that could add up to a huge problem. I had a med aide skip out when a pt had a heart attach and died in the middle of the hallway. She called 911 and left. Didn't come find me, didn't meet the paramedics, just left. To me, and not to blast you of course, med aides are a problem. They just don't know enough to essentially give the meds that are keeping a pt alive. To me the best nurses, were CNA's. I was not a CNA, not to say I am a bad nurse, but there is a differance, especially if you are going to work in a nursing home. GOOD LUCK!!!
