how would you guys answer these questions. what experiences have you had in the field that enabled you to obtain the skills and values that you have or have strengthened due to your working environment. thank you for your responses ahead of time.

1. describe a scenario that challenged your core values and explain how you responded.

2. critical thinking skills are an essential aspect of leadership in nursing. give an example of a challenge in which you utilized critical thinking skills to resolve the issue. be specific.

Umm those seem like application essay questions, and as such you really should talk about your own experiences. I know thats not the answer you are looking for, but since one of the questions stresses values, I really dont think its a good idea to pass someone else's story as your own.

the whole idea is to make you do a self-assessment. Sorry, my views would not help you.

You meanies! I cannot believe you will not give this student just a little help! Shame on you! No wonder they say that nurses eat their young!

Application essays can be tough, but you should definitely speak from your own experiecne. If you are having difficulty thinking of scenarios where your values where challenged, or where you used critical thinking, ask some of your close friends, or a family member. Maybe they have seen you in action, so to speak.

Perhaps a professor in college has seen you take on a leadership role in a group project, or maybe a close friend or family member made a life-changing decison, and you had to cope with the implications.

We've all faced these types of scenarios, so think about times when you really stood out and showed good character. It's fine to ask for help with the editing process, but your sincerity will count for alot, so really give it some thought!

Best of luck to you!

If a nurse in the field gives you an answer, it's going to be painfully obvious, and you're going to be in a worse situation than not knowing what to say. Stacy has good advice, go with it!

Question #1 refers to a situation in which you faced an ethical dilemma, perhaps a time at which what needed to be done conflicted with something you believe. An example would be a pro-life nurse asked to assist with an abortion, or perhaps a patient who needed a blood transfusion but the patient's religious beliefs prohibited administering blood.

Question #2 deals with complex problems and how you go about solving them. First you have to identify the problem, you develop a solution, you apply the solution and then analyze how effective it was. One example might be your decision to go to nursing school. Maybe your problem was like mine at the time: I was in a dead-end job with low pay and no hope of advancement. The job had also become boring and repetitive. My solution was to enter the field of health care, which I knew a lot about (with two RNs in the family). In this particular scenario you won't be able to analyze how effective the solution is before you get out of school, but you get the general idea. I'm sure there is at least one problem you have encountered that you had to really think through before proceeding.

I have to agree with all of the posts, although I think the first two are more appropriate. It isn't mean to tell someone that they have to come up with their own essay answers. The essays are how the admission panels get to know a person, therefore if you are putting down someone else's experience it is a falsehood. I just completed the essays myself and it took quite a while to do so (I got into nursing school. Hooray)!. I recommend getting together with a mentor nurse and telling that person your experiences so that they may help you put it down on paper in a coherent and intellecual manner.

understands what previous posters are saying...they sound like actual homework "essay" questions that the student should try to apply. they are very hard to answer. im in school also right know and struggle with my own experience or not!!! lol

Thank you all for your replies. This has atleast given me a direction.

Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to you all.

Bye.
