I have 2 interviews tomorrow for New Grad positions. Do you all think no work history will hinder my chances of getting a position? I have been a stay at home Mom of 4 kids for years and so I do not have any recent job experience at all:confused: I couldn't get a job as a CNA during school because of my husband's schedule. I graduate in May and now would not have a problem working nights, days or some mix.

I was also a stay at home mom for many years---]but I am sure your like me in the fact you didnt just 'stay home" play up any volunteer stuff you did, all those hours put in at the kids school, girl scouts, ]boy scouts, vacation bible school etc etc etc...it takes alot of organizational skills to manage 4 kids, a home, a spouse and attend nursing school...this is your time to do some bragging on yourself...you worked hard in school and managed to get through it while still managing a household...Good luck!

I agree with the previous reply; this is the time to brag about yourself. Being a mom is one of the hardest and busiest jobs there is, so play it up. You have plenty of organizational skills, and you've learned to prioritize I'm sure! Also, with the many nursing jobs out there, I'm sure you will get many job offers. Good luck!

They have seen your resume. They know you don't have any official work experience, and yet they still invited you to interview so they must like what they see about your experience in nursing school. Be prepared for questions about your challenges and triumphs in your clinical experience and make sure you have your CI's down as references. You will be fine. Your experience is far from unique. Good luck.

I am not a stay at home mom, but in my mind you HAVE held a full time position, if not a paying job. Your family and their needs have required that you assess, prioritize, plan and implement as much at home as you would as a nurse.

Lots of nurses have been hired out of nursing school who entered right from highschool, surely your skills at home are as valuable as those of someone who tossed pizza or served coffee as part time jobs.

Wish you luck.

I am in agreement with the others, I don't think not having a work history will matter. You have an interview so they must like something or many things about you. If you made it through school with four kids, you likely have organizational skills. Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for your replies everyone! I do indeed have my Clinical Instructors down as references too. I guess I am just a little nervous since I haven't had to interview anywhere in a blue moon:chuckle

Sounds like a work history to me. Housewife and mom of 4 kids is definitely work in my point of view..

Please let us know how the interviews go. I am also a SAHM for 21 years, I am in my third semseter of nursing. I graduate this December. I am also concerned about this. I have been volunteering for almost 2 years, so I hope that helps. I have applied for an extern position. I am just waiting to hear back. Good Luck and please let us know how the interviews go.
