NJ nursing license issue with delinquent school loan

Nurses General Nursing

Just had a question, I am graduating in May and I have a school loan that defaulted while I was in Nursing school. It was a loan for a previous degree. I now pay through the agency monthly. When I apply I need to indicate this. I am on automatic monthly payments so its paid on time. Do you think I will have any issues being issued my nursing license? My loan is now in good standing, its just paid through the collections group. Any advice/thoughts. Please no negative comments about paying my bills, theres a lot of other details not included which led to this.

Thanks

I'm not from NJ, so I don't know the laws there. It is true that defaulting on a student loan hurts your credit, but I cannot think why you would have an issue obtaining your nursing license.

This is a question best directed to the NJ BON.

Best wishes, and kudos for dealing with your previous school loan debt.

Go to your state's BON website and check out the disciplinary action age.

Defaulting on school loans and child support are big reasons for the Board to deny issuing a license.

That being said, OP is making good on the loan, therefore it's no longer in default. She may have some 'splaining to do to the BON, but she has proof that she's making good on the loan.

If you are making payments you are likely no longer considered in default since you are remediated

I'm licensed in 2 states and neither one asked about any delinquent loan payments or other credit issues. Check with your BON just to make sure. Good for you for getting back on track with your payments!

Even though i am paying the collection agency?

If you have a remediation plan. Ask the agency or you can look up your status online
