When filling out applications as a new nurse... should you use clinical experience or just say no experience?

Specializes in Neuro/Peds.

I use all experience that I can legitimately use. Be sure to be upfront with just how experienced you are.

Specializes in NICU.

Clinical (as in academic clinical) experience does not count as experience. Be very careful not to fudge the line here, because hiring managers know better.

Specializes in CCU, cardiac tele, NICU.

I put a "clinical hour breakdown" section on my resume.

Specializes in Oncology.

i am currently a student & just got employed as a CNA, i put on my resume all clinicals & hrs completed plus my work experience...under the clinicals done i talked about the skills i did

Our Leadership and Management Instructor told us to add a section titled "clinical experience"..

Specializes in Med Surg, OB, Acute Rehab.

I will be graduating soon, so talked with my career services at school, they said that Clinical Experience is a big HELLO I know what I am doing.. I have the credentials to show for it also, do you have any RN, Charge Nurse, MD recommendations? She also said that you can leave a reference # on a piece of paper but having clinical recommendations is huge! Back to clinical experience if they had to choose between a graduate nurse who had minimal/no clinical experience and a graduate nurse with a several semesters of clinical experience your application/resume will be put at the top.. Experience is experience! Also, if you did any voluntary work like giving blood add that on there also.. IDK if this helps you at all

Specializes in pediatrics, public health.

I listed my clinical rotations and the hours in each -- this was on the advice of my nursing school. Have no idea if this helped or not -- didn't get any feedback on it.

Some specialized units at some hospitals won't consider hiring you as a new grad unless you did your preceptorship in that specialty, so I wanted to be especially sure to have my NICU preceptorship on my resume when I applied to NICU positions.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all of your info.
