Need Opinions from Nurses about job selection

Nurses General Nursing

Hi,

I am new graduate nurse in the big city and have been looking for a job for almost 8 months, They are currently not hiring new graduates as well as at the time did not have my bachelors which is a requirement here. Now enrolled in a program for my bsn a couple of offers have come to the table and I need experienced advice on what route to take.

One offer is a hospital specializing in ambulatory surgery. Known for being a magnet nursing institution. I would be per diem starting on one floor but eventually would be able to train and float from floor to floor. Great pay!! No overnights no weekends! They've already called me and told me they would like to move forward with the process and to complete the physical and drug test. My only concern is because I am new grad and dont have experience what kind of experience could I gain from ambulatory care.

The other offer is a hospital on any floor that has a position although I put a request in for maternity. Definitely overnight. Regular pay part time and Id have to have another interview with the floor manager to see if I even qualify for the opening whenever the position actually opens up. Basically what I feel the only perk from the hospital would be the experience and skill set.

So for anyone willing to give advice what do you think? :nurse:

Specializes in L&D.

If you have a way to get health insurance, I'd take the per diem ambulatory surgery job.

You'd get good experience I think and the schedule sounds great!

Specializes in Certified Med/Surg tele, and other stuff.

Where do you see yourself down the road career wise? Do you need health insurance?

You can learn many things from ambulatory care:

Time management,

multi tasking.

working with MD's and Anesthesiologists

Deciding when to call such MD when the pt isn't doing well. Not all get to go home.

IV starts

DC teaching a variety of surgeries

That's a few things I can think of.

Specializes in FNP.

Did you want to do maternity care specifically? (uh, yuck. But hey, that's me). If not, I see no advantage to that position at all.

Good luck.

If it were me, I'd choose the Ambulatory Surgery position. Sounds great :)

Thank you so much guys... I was just hesitant because Everyone says your first year work should be med surg before its anything else! But hopefully this job goes through! Thanks for your support.

Specializes in CVIR, Tele, Post open heart, step-down.

You"re a new grad, any experience is a good thing. Now days getting your foot in the door can lead to many opportunities. Good luck!
