I have recently graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Office Administration with a concentration in Medical and am now continuing to take more courses at a major university to obtain a Bachelor Degree. I would like to find a job or an internship in this field in order to get on-the-job experience. Does anyone know a good place to start looking for a job?

A Medical Office Administration position can be a varied number of jobs. I have been trained in medical terminology, medical coding, and would be capable of working in a doctor's office or hospital. I was actually hoping to find a job that I could possibly do from home. At present I am taking a course in Nursing Informatics. I am not a nurse, but the course is required for my major in Health Studies. I'm finding this course very interesting and would like to be able to get a job in Electronic Healthcare Records. This is a growing field at present and requires personnel that are specifically trained in the area of coding and organizing healthcare records.

I'm not sure that a nursing forum is the best place to get the advice that you're looking for. As a nurse, I'm vaguely aware of EMR behind the scenes management but that's only because I share office space with some of those folks. Your average nurse is not likely to be aware of much that applies to your question.

Maybe get a bachelors in health information management. I know a lot of office administrator/medical coders/health informatics people who climbed the ladder like that. After some experience in one of these positions, MBA/MHA can help you into a management/leadership position.

If you work as a receptionist at a clinic, it can help you get into this field. Another option is to work for an insurance company.

You apply to physician offices. No reputable company will hire an inexperienced new grad with an associates degree to work independently from home. Those jobs are either outsourced overseas or given to those with demonstrable paid experience. Many facilities are hiring RNs & LPNs in the health information management & coding departments as reimbursement is significantly higher when those with a clinical background to coding & extraction

Thanks for your answer to my question. I am working toward a degree in Health Studies, but a lot of the courses required seem to be related more to nursing than administration work. Do you think I would have a better chance of getting into this field if I went for LPN degree instead?

Are you a nurse?

If not check your local vocational school or county college. This is usually a medical records clerk

You can look for a degree in health information management. CUNY School of Professional Studies offers an online BS in this field.

Thank you very much for offering the information on a school for health informatics training. I am really anxious to put the knowledge I have gained to work, but need someone to counsel me on just how to get a job. Like were to apply. I will look into this school and see if they will accept the credits that I have already earned.
