Long term acute care considered med-surg?

Hey all, I am on the docket for graduation from LPN program early May. I just finished a clinical rotation at what is according to the facility, a long term acute care "hospital." I thoroughly enjoyed and liked my time there. I saw similar patient Dx and care as the acute med/surg floors I've been on in the local major hospitals. It also has an ICU. I was curious if I ever became employed at a facility like this, would that be considered med-surg experience on a resume' or no? Much appreciate.

Nowadays the care people are receiving in LTC facilities is more acute than it used to be. My current employer requested 2 years of med-surg and they did consider my LTC experience to be med-surg. On your resumes be sure to list ALL the skills you used at your job!! Good Luck!!

A Long Term ACUTE Care hospital is just that, an ACUTE care hospital where the patients just happen to stay longer. The average stay is something like 28 days.

SO, to answer your question, Yes, it would be considered Med/surg experience. Just like a long term acute care ICU is ICU experience. Granted you won't get fresh post op CABG's or ANYTHING fresh post op, but you do have very critically ill patients.

Yay! That is some dandy fine news! I felt that this experience may be just what I needed to mentally place my thoughts toward a possible niche. I worked with some mighty fine nurses today, and they extended so much appreciation for all the extras I did for them since I can now do so much more. This was the first time I truly felt like my knowledge, skills, and critical thinking kicked into high gear, and sensed their trust in me.

yes an LTAC is med-surg. I worked in one for 4 years and a good majority of my patients had multi-system problems. Many were geriatrics and quite frail. I now work a med-surg floor and these patients actually are not as hard to care for.

my first clinical med-surg rotation was in a LTAC hospital.
