Robin, I've been mentoring students and "newbies" for several years and find that it gives me new outlooks on nursing and makes me feel younger too. I strongly encourage each and every one of the "seasoned" nurses to get involved with this type of activity. We can change the image of nursing from "eating our young" to nuturing and encouraging them. Just imagine how strong we can be if all of us did this!
Great thread....
UGH!!! Why do they insist on making some nursing programs CRAP... We had our second test in nursing 2, and 15 out of 25 students failed it... And I was one of them....
They teach us one way in one then change it when you get into two.. Suddenly everything they tought you was wrong....
Sorry.. I know this wasn't the thread to complain!!
I really enjoy helping out nursing students and new nurses. For one, it helps keep me on my toes about all the new stuff. I try and stay as current as possible, but sometimes it is just plain difficult. The students can give me an update on what is the latest in nursing. I even learn things from them! To me, nursing is an ongoing, everchanging profession. Of course some things in nursing will always be the same, such as good patient care, dignity for patients, etc. Modern medicine is changing so fast it is hard to keep pace. Thanks for the great thread. :kiss

And not just students need a kind word or just a pat of thanks! Sometimes it seems that we work our butts off and nobody notices; then comes a simple smile or word of thanks and your whole outlook changes! I had that happen this morning as I was leaving work!
