Just wanted to share...

Last Monday I was at work, and we had a group of ADN students doing clinicals on our floor. One of the students had one of my patients. As the day progressed, instead of caring for just her patient, the student ended up following me around while I cared for patients. She was a really sweet girl, and really seemed excited about it (her first clinicals). I've only been a nurse about a year, so I was a little nervous about it, but I did my best. She started an IV on a patient, did a dressing change, helped prepare a patient for surgery, and we bath a few patients (the instructors was aware of all that we did). And she did a great job.

That evening as they were getting ready to leave I overheard her telling another student how lucky she was to have been able to follow me that day, how smart I am, how great I am with patients, ect. She said I was the "best nurse on the floor" and she hoped she could be just like me. Now, I don't think any of it is true, but I still have so many nurses that I feel that way about, and it just feels so good to know someone looked at me with the same respect and admiration that I feel for those women. Sometimes I wonder if I am cut out to be a nurse, especially when things are so busy on our floor, but she really made me feel a lot better about myself.

What an awesome, awesome story.

Seriously - I think I could die happy the next day if I ever heard someone say something like that about me in my career.

Next to knowing you made a profound difference in a patient's life, I think this is the "gold standard" as far as knowing whether or not you've "made it" as a nurse.

when that happened to me i was still unsure of myself and feeling somewhat lost. when students were surprised to find out i'd only been licensed for a year, i realized just how much i had learned and grown. i would imagine that you had that feeling too?
