Is this okay?

Hi all,

So I was supposed to transfer to another unit in 4 weeks and recently discovered that it will be 6 weeks before I can actually transfer. The hospital policy states that I'm only obligate to 4 weeks notice, but my manager said it's up to them to decide on when to let me go. Is that right? To make matters worse, no one discuss with me. I was excited to exit soon and now I have to wait longer. I guess it's not really that big of a deal waiting two more weeks, but I am very upset that no one said anything to me about the change until now.

Anyways, just venting as usual. Any thoughts?

No one can comment on your facility's specific policy. If you're transferring from one unit to another within the same facility I would patiently bide your time and try not to upset the apple cart too much.

Be gracious - it prob has something to do with staffing around Thanksgiving.

Maybe 6 weeks is the end of the scheduling period?

Everywhere I've worked over the years, when you're transferring from one unit or service to another within the same organization, your current NM gets to decide when you can make the switch (when s/he is willing to let you leave). In the long run, two weeks more or less isn't really going to mean much. Best wishes!

At my former hospital, your current manager could hold you for 16 weeks for an internal transfer!

Wow! I didn't know all of that. I will just wait patiently then and be grateful that I'm even given the opportunity to transfer. Guessed I got overly excited and was ready to run. Lol! Thank you all for your response.

Rnperdiem, It is. I didn't think about that. I was just really happy and had my mind set on the official date. Anyways, hearing from you all shine some light in the situation and I'm going to stop bickering about it.

In my experience the amount of notice that you are required to give them is different than the amount of time your manager can hold you before a transfer. I would stick it out, it's two weeks.

It could be worse ... :) A few years ago, in my current job, I became unhappy with my current location/assignment and wanted to move to a different, open position within my own service (doing the same job but in a different facility). I was told by my superiors that I could have the open position, but I couldn't move to the other location until they hired a replacement for me in my existing position, because they couldn't spare me in my current location. I waited six months to be allowed to make the move -- kept asking my boss, periodically, if they were making any progress on recruiting and hiring someone to replace me, kept getting told that they hadn't found anyone yet. Then, they decided to move someone else on my service away from another facility we served and needed to fill that position. Leadership asked me to take that position in the third facility and, after thinking about it for a couple days, I agreed (on a Friday) to do so, because it would at least get me out of my current position. Suddenly, after I had been waiting for six months to be allowed to move, they could get along without me at my current location just fine, and I could start at the third facility (and leave my current position open) the following Monday, leaving my current position open.
