is morphine used for N/V?

hi

i had a patient who was nauseated and vomitting. physician prescribed a iv morphine. so my question is morphine used for n/v or is it used for withdrawal from drug? there is nothing in this patient's past history of drug abuse or she isnt taking any strong pain medicine.

Morphine can CAUSE nausea and vomiting. Why was the pt admitted? Common anti nausea drugs are : reglan,phenergan,zofran,compazine,anzemet,tigan. Methadone would be used for withdrawal from narcotics. Valium or ativan, and maybe libruim for withdrawal from alcohol.

We give ativan for n/v too. It's not a first line drug though. Could he have meant meclazine (Antivert)?

Also, what else was going on with the patient? Did she have abd pain? Did she have a kidney stone? What I'm getting at is that the morphine could be for something else that's going on, not the n/v. That being said, an antiemetic should have been written for as well.

Severe, intractable pain can cause N/V, my hat's off to a MD peceptive enough to properly treat his patients and be concerned for their comfort.

was the morphine given for the nausea?.. or was it an adjunct to abd pain or something like that?... im sure the doc didn't give morphine for strict nausea... there had to be some kind of underlying pain issue.... well... don't know the doc... but at least i hope!!...lol
