Once you pass NCLEX, you will never need to retake it. An LVN in California who wishes to work in another state must apply for licensure by endorsement in the new state where he/she intends to work, since CA is not a member of the compact.

My original LVN license is from California, which is where I am originally from. I moved to Texas in late 2005 and received a permanent Texas LVN license by endorsement by applying, paying the appropriate fees, and passing the federal background check. I have also attained an Oklahoma LPN license by way of endorsement.

thank you!!!!:)

Endorse your CA license to the state you move to. Once the NCLEX has been passed, that's it, for good!!! Only way you have to retake the NCLEX is if you ever let a license expire for too long a time, (in CA 4 years). The wise thing to do when you don't want to work or pay the money to maintain an active license is to renew it as inactive. So active or inactive is the way to go. Expired no.
