If a pt is fasting for glucose and lipid labs but c/o a very bad stomach ache during the course of the night, is it ok to give them mylanta? I know when I have fasting blood owrk I take my regularly prescribed meds, but what about something like Mylta or Tylenol or other OTCs?

Thanks for your input! :)

Meds are fine with sips of water.

I think the MD ought to have input.

If a medication has sugar in it (e.g., some cough meds) it should probably be avoided for a fasting glucose and lipid panel. Otherwise, meds are ok, whether they are OTCs or prescribed.

Mylanta, MOM and the other similar liquid meds contain sorbitol, as do the Mylanta chewables.

This is probably a question for the lab or pharmacy. Let us know what you find out. :)

hey! so i am paranoid and just called our physician assistant--she said it is absolutely ok to give the mylnta...of course i did mention the kind we have stocked is the flavorless kind, so I would still ask if any facility has flavored kind. Thansk everyone!
