I've never seen or heard of an LVN in labor and delivery around here. I occasionally see them in med/surg or behavioral health ...but even then, they've been "grandfathered" in- never recently hired. I'm in the south (LA/Orange County area).

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

I'm not from CA, but have been in labor 5x (plus in for preterm contractions 3x). I've never been cared for by an LPN in L&D. I have in postpartum though

Specializes in Neuro, Telemetry.

L&D had a lot of initial assessment, IVP meds, and often requires skills out of scope for an LVN. I can't say for sure, but I am pretty positive that finding an LVN in L&D is like finding sunken treasure in the ocean. While there are probably some out there, they've been there a long time and not newly hired.

There was no function for an LPN in any of the units I worked in. It was all RN.
