HELP!!! I have a Preceptor From HELL:

I've been on the job for over a month home health wound care and with each evaluation it's getting worse to the point of my preceptor is slandering me, when were out in the field it's oh your doing great keep doing what your doing etc but when we have our weekly evaluations she is stating I'm not following orders for dressing changes when we both clearly agree what to use with the choices on the order and states I'm copying previous assessments just because I looked at a previous assessment record to see if the patient wears glasses? OMG!!.

I really need this job and my supervisor for wound care stated I could switch to a different team and preceptor and I would have a new supervisor but eventually I would still end up having the same patient as her at some point. I really think it's personal or something is wrong in this woman's personal life I want to go to the medical surgical team but now with her evaluations I'm doomed she's got my current supervisor afraid to transfer me to the other team this person is pure evil, I want to prove her wrong by being evaluated by someone else and my gut tells me to RUN from this job and I cannot transfer for 5 months, but I do not want to burn bridges with the hospital where I'll eventually doing my clinical s, I'm afraid if I get one of her patient's she'll make up something so terrible that I'll be reported to the board what would you do.

Please be nice I lost a loved one last night

Hello,

I would take the transfer with the other Preceptor. At least, you can genuinely say you gave it your all. This will also help your case if you ever need to. At least, with two different evaluations on file, this will give the supervisor something to really form a decision from. I think that you should be able to go to someone in a higher position than the supervisor to get help from.

So sorry about your loss. Change preceptors. Some people are just not meant to teach and evaluate, some like to eat their young and it seems your preceptor fits this mold.

Thank you, for your kind reply, yes I'm planning to go directly to someone over my immediate supervisor. last week it was no problem to transfer and then with this last evaluation my supervisor changed up her story to well I'll have to talk to the other dept supervisor of the other team, and plus on the personal side my supervisor from day one of the interview is always patting me on the shoulder with every conversation, I have not seen her do this with anyone else, I'm not quitting, I want to get evaluation from another preceptor.

1st, take meticulous notes every day. Journal each case, what was done and said, with quotes. Then insist your evaluations be done in the presence of a 3rd party, and insist on documentation of each issue she brings up. Compare your journal with her recollection and ask her to explain the variances. If necessary, start having her initial your journal entries every day.

Well at this stage I'm asking for a transfer to the other team, with a new preceptor and a new supervisor.

Preceptor actually wrote 4 pages of everything I did wrong from using to much tape or not enough, to oh yes the critical thinking skills, to I could endanger a patient, so at this point theirs no way that I would go another week with this preceptor and allow her to damage and slander me further.

I did have my rebuttal on what the preceptor said and that was noted, you know how it is when you sit back and try to absorb all this and your in shock.

I was told by the preceptor several times this past week your doing excellent? I will head your advice for the next preceptor, but I have a feeling things will be quite the opposite.

That is a hellofa long sentence. Careful, or she is going to write you up for failure to document with appropriate punctuation. ;)

Anyway, good luck.

just a quick distinction,

she is libeling you if it's a written evaluation. slander is spoken. libel is written.

sorry, good luck with your decision.

Transfer as soon as possible. Document her treatment of you non-emotionally and factually, and be ready and able to turn it into Human Resources. She needs to be gone from the organization if she is truly being professionally hostile to you, and you might be the 4th or 5th person she has done this to.
