So I'm a new grad struggling to get a job. Today I got a call back from one of the hospital I previously interview for and they asked me to come in for another interview (for a different position) :heartbeat Also a hospital located in other state is interested in speaking with me personally, not to mention I might get called in for an interview regarding a new residency program..so I have one upcoming interview and two potential one...this time I will make sure to prepare (last time I kind of just went in and got stuck on question-that is why I think I didnt get that job, plus the recruiter told me I didnt show enough passion for the position) So basically I want to send word of encouragement to all the new struggling grads, keep applying, dont get discouraged by rejection, just keep doing your thing and things will happen for you..I will keep you guys posted about my job search adventures.God I just want to work arleady:heartbeat!!!:))))

congratulation , and hopfully you hear good news very soon :)

here did you get your training college or private school?? witch city??

that's great to hear. I've been applying to practically EVERY hospital in my area and abroad and only recently have I started receiving calls back.

Call me stupid, but I turned down a job at a Nursing Home. I just didn't see myself being happy there. I went into Nursing because I wanted to enjoy my job..and the nursing home wasn't cutting it for me. My parents think I should take any job.

I actually have an interview at a doctors office (cardiology) tomorrow...its not a hospital..but it beats a Nursing Home. I guess.

I was given advice that I should even apply for a job at a receptionist at a hospital because they hire within first...what do you think?

Don't take the first job you are offered. If you have interviews for different positions, interview for them all before you make a decision. And ask for a tour of the unit. If they won't give you one, unless it is a psych facility, run for the hills.

Be sure to come across positive and energetic. Talk about your strong points. Look up these facilities on line first and know a little about what they do and what their high points are in their advertising. If they ask you what areas you need to improve on, be creative. Think of one area that you still feel that you need to do better with like IV starts and tell them. Then follow up with asking if they have an IV team or class that you can take that can help you. Make sure you come across eager to learn. Dress very professionally, cover your tats, come with several copies of your resume and you might want to take some notes as well.

When you ask questions, they should be specific about the unit such as: do you have set charge nurses or do they rotate that position, how are assignments made, how much orientation would I get, what would be included in that orientation, would I have the same preceptor all the time, how often do you do performance reviews, if I make an error what do I do, what shift would I be working and will I have to rotate shifts. Ask about scheduling and how to submit a schedule request. DO NOT ASK ABOUT SALARY OR BENEFITS unless the person you are speaking with brings it up. Usually this comes up when you get an offer.

Shine those shoes and get out there. Good Luck. Make the interview fun.

Wohoo got some good news! The out of state hospital just called me to schedule an interview for next wensday, now all I got to do is drive there to find out the location of the hospital, heh the drive will quite an adventure that is for sure 76 miles each way, yuck!!!!

Wow 76miles is a long drive. I worked 50miles from home and didnt like the drive. Hope you get a job soon though.

I hope you get the job that you enjoy - honestly, I hope everyone gets the job that they enjoy! - but in this economy, I believe that getting experience is what is most important. If this doctor's office job doesn't come through, I would think seriously about taking a nursing home job for a year or two if that is all that is available to you. It's not forever - and it gets you that crucial first year of experience. And from what I keep seeing on this board, these days, many hospitals are being very selective and saying they only want people with a year or two of experience MINIMUM.

Here's the danger in holding out for a hospital job or even a non-nursing-home job: you could be waiting a long long time, and start forgetting your nursing skills because you are not using them - and then when the next crop of grads comes out, THEY are more attractive as potential hires then you are, because they haven't been sitting around for six months or a year unemployed and forgetting their skills.

The interview at the doctors office went well. Its a cardiology office...they do IV meds, pacemaker checks, echo's etc, so I have no fear of losing my skills. It seemed the Doctor was really impressed with me. But there is a uniform policy (I'm a Muslim woman and I cover my head with a scarf). The HR rep who sat in the meeting with me told me "we have a uniform policy, you can't wear that head dress." To which I told him "with all due respect, if that's the case, i can't take this job." I'm desperate for a job...but not THAT desperate.....that's discrimination!!!

I can't believe she said that to you. I wouldn't take the job either!

Blackheartednurse,

Good luck on your job interview! I have had to start applying to jobs that would take me 1 1/2 hours to get to. I just can't stand being without a job for this long!

Yah...its ludicrous....not only will I not take the job...but I will definitely file a complaint with the civil rights committee at CAIR. We preach religious freedom...this totally steps all over it. I won't take no for an answer.
