Haldol is a drug that i have a love/hate relationship with. Yes, it does help calm down a confused and agitated patient (and we do give it IV in the ICUs) but when you consider that it is frequently given to the geriatric population, it has a huge half life and I wonder sometimes if we are helping or hurting these patients by using it.
Moonshadeau, usually in your unit I would guess that your patients already have an ECG before the need arises for them to have the Haldol (you do work in a tele unit, don't you?).
Trauma RUs, what is Geodon? I haven't heard of that one before.

I, too work ICU and only in Critical Care areas in my facility are we allowed to give IVP Haldol. NEVER on the floors!
I LOVE DIPRIVAN!!!!! Every intubated pt should be on this drug! It acts quickly and wears off quickly, most of the time anyway.

Diprivian IS propofol. I too LOVE this drug in the unit, as I mentioned in earlier post.

I have given Haldol IV/PO/IM...........We have a nice range of confusion protocols. I have yet to decide if I prefer ativan or Haldol........................
Most MD's prefer Haldol as it is less sedating than ativan.....
Profofol is still the best vented sedation.

Geodon is a fairly new atypical anti-psychotic.
