From experience, has anyone had a relatively low stress nursing job ?

Just wondering if anyone has ever worked as a nurse in a low stress setting, and what they liked and disliked about it. Yes this is a serious question.:nurse:

Also, many nurses are pleasantly surprised how low stress Emergency Departments CAN be, I know they're certainly not known for that, but that's because we keep it big secret, lol. Think about, the majority of the time, it's not bursting at the seems, the doctors already there-no unanswered pages, or crappy phone signals. You have algorithms and standing orders for symptoms, and if you get a really horrid baby sitting required patient, you get them to the floor or door really quick (halfway joke), and ER has the best Coffee (besides one LPN who snuck De-Caf in on us, and has been missing since (another half joke). But all in all, despite a Very rare hair pullers, the ER/ED is one of lowest stress jobs I have ever worked.

You and I work in some very different EDs... ;)

Probably so, since I can't recall you from your picture, cute.

But, stated with clarity, the things that stressed me out on the floor (med surge, tele, and post surgical units) aren't present in the ER.It's all in what your "stressor" is. I felt like the Emergency Department from Med-Surg was akin to leaving a Stocking job at Walmart, for a CEO position at some entertainment industry. I suddenly wasn't dreading work, or working to live- I found my niche, and lived to work there.

Busy, Challenging, and exciting work is not stressful to me. When I am enjoying what I'm doing, and being constantly entertained by an ever-changing humor fueled (at times) patient population- it's hard to be stressed.

I work on a med/surg floor. It is relatively no stress. Sure, we have our busy days, but I walk out on time 9/10 days, feeling like I did a pretty good job at taking care of my patients.

i also think stress is related to the person, more than the floor/unit. I just don't let stuff get to me, and I don't get bogged down

Cord blood will be collected anyway for type and screen and (in my state) syphilis. Why not talk to the nurse manager? Nurses are used to collecting for cord blood banking, it probably wouldn't be much of an issue to get yours, too, although the mandated tests would probably take precedence if there isn't much blood in the cord.

At our facility, cord blood is only collected if there is a setup (MOC is O or Rh-). We don't collect cord blood for syphilis screening. When that's collected, it's collected at the perineum, before the placenta is delivered. For purposes of research, we try to be consistent in our collection methods, which means that for our studies, we collect cord blood at the insertion site.

It would also require buy-in from every single physician and midwife, to do this. That just ain't gonna happen.

This is going to sound odd I am sure, but I work in the ED and I feel like my job often gives me little stress. If I were to be completely honest, I LOVE my job 8 out of 10 shifts. Because of this, I don't find work stressful. I am not someone to get stressed easily though. It's just not in my personality. I have had to live in Survival mode my whole life and been put through hell and back, so now, I let things go easily. Once in a while my job will stress me out, but most times, I enjoy what I do, I enjoy going to work, I work tons of OT. I go into work on a Monday and it's absolute chaos and people are freaking out, I look at the board and see we are full with tons in the waiting room and to me I am like "meh, it's a typical Monday in the ER when I'm working" (I've been coined the Ambulance and Physicatric patient magnent) It takes a lot to stress me out and 2 shifts out of 10 I will probably be stressed and "over it" and ready to chalk that day up as a wash.

I think it's a matter of enjoying what you do. When you work in an area that you love you won't often feel stressed and this is completely individual to the person and their personality. I found an area that suits my personality well and that I love.

HAHAHA So I didn't read any of the replies yet when I made mine. Apparently I am not the only one that works in a ER and doesn't feel it's a high stress area.
