Career Planning. Advice? BSN.

Nurses General Nursing

I have 2 years of clinical experience as a nurse in the ER, recently just switched positions and now I'm on the float team for med/surg and pediatrics. I have only been in this position for a month... really, the only reason I accepted this position is to gain more experience outside of ER. It's been great so far, but I'm starting to miss the variety that the ER has to offer. I don't think med/surg is where I want to be, but I love pediatrics.

Since I'm still a newbie nurse, I'm really just wanting to try a bunch of different areas of nursing to test the waters. Nursing is an awesome career in that there are SO many different paths you can choose, but it can also be overwhelming when planning your career. So, what I want to know is which area of nursing do you work, what your day is like, and why you love it (or hate it :/)?

I have been a floor nurse with a BSN for almost 3.5 years. I enjoy the floor I work on, but I am considering going to get my MSN nurse education degree online and was wanting some feedback on how it's been working full time and balancing both!

Im 16 and i this is my second year of taking nursing classes but im afraid i wont be able to afford to go to college i am in the 11th grade and i only have one year left to find a way to pay for college to become an rn and we barely have any money to pay for it.

I worked acute care as a float nurse for 17 years. Many interesting experiences. I don't regret it.

I love out patient surgery because.....TADA....no more weekends, nights, holidays, etc.

I was kind of annoyed when I switched to out patient surgery and met co-workers who nonchalantly said...."oh I tried acute care a few months, it was hard, I didn't like the hours, so I came to out patient surgery." I still feel like they didn't pay their dues!

You're in 11grade and have been taking nursing classes for almost two years?

And you have only one year left to figure out how to become a RN. And there's no money.

I'm not totally confused here but pretty close to it.

Here's a plan if it fits in with the confusion:

Get a job. (save money)

Apply to Community College.

Take prequisite courses one at a time.

Pay as you go (no loans)

Have patience and see how you do.

After prerequisites apply to AD program @CC

Wait until accepted. (patience)

Continue to save your money.

Do not get involved with the for-profit loan mills.

Go to (collegescorecard.ed.gov) to look at and compare schools.

If you don't go to school as frugally as possible, it's not worth it.

That is your mission.

This is a life plan not a 1-2-6 so you have to be methodical and steadfast in your approach.

That's the only way to achieve anything that's worthwhile and NOT get taken to the cleaners by those who see nursing students as punching dummies to take advantage of with a smile.

Rural home health. It was M-F days driving to 5-6 patients providing assessment, teaching, procedures. A lot of autonomy and responsibility. I loved it because I had a tangible impact everyday. And because I met so many interesting and inspiring people.
