can a new grad get hired as tech or unit secretary?

Seems like the only new grads getting hired here are those who were already working in those positions. At this point I'm willing to do it for a while and have applied but is there any chance a licensed RN would be hired for those jobs?

If I were single, childless, renting, I would move. But I can't.

man, i hear ya! i recently graduated and i sit for my boards in two weeks. none of the hospitals are hiring anymore new grads, so i have decided to look into ltac, skilled nursing, etc. i know it may not be what you originally intended on doing, but in this economy you are going to have to take what you can get. at a skilled facility at least you will be using nursing skills you know. good luck!

Of course you have a chance. But check you BON of nursing regarding working as a tech with a RN license and the expectation. In NYS you are only supposed to do tasks allowed by the license you are hired under. INHO it is a good way to get you foot in the door if you are willing to work for less $$$.

I forgot...do you need a CNA license to work as a tech?

NO. Im a PCT and Im not certified. I just had to pass fundamentals of nursing and med-surg 1.

I too am looking a for a job. I have worked as a PCT for a year and there just isn't any jobs at my hospital. I graduated a month ago and take boards this weekend.

Since New Grad jobs I know a RN that is working as a unit secretary at Standford. So, yes you can!!

I know someone who got her LVN license but was hired on as Unit Secretary because that was the only open position and her friend got her in.

I got my EMT license and started a tech job after graduating from school and before I took NCLEX. Good decision. After working 6 or 7 months as a tech I went to med/surg as a LVN. I will stay on my job as I get my RN and get RN experience.

LTAC is a great option because that too is considered med/surg experience. Just get your foot in wherever you can and go from there. Good luck! ;)
