Does anyone live in Ventura? I live in Ohio and cannot get ahold of my brother which I always can. I am listening to KATV in Ventura on the web and it sounds like a fire in Santa Paula is heading right towards them??????

Can anyone living there tell me if this is true?

My mom lives in Ventura and she's fine. Santa Paula and Ventura are far enough apart that it shouldn't be a problem for many.

A lot of the canyons back through there burn without any homes lost.

Hope you get ahold of him!

I appreciate your posting. I am such a worry wart. They closed part of 118, 23 and are considering closing 126. I think the only way out would be to head N on 101......

There's still the 5 N/S as well as the 101. Most of the fires are in Simi Valley which is pretty far.

I don't know how long your brothers lived there, but back in 93(?) we had a huge fire at about the same time...I just remember the ash being everywhere..what a mess.

Thank you again so much for posting and helping to squelch my fears.

I'm not sure if you've been able to get a hold of your brother yet, but I thought I would let you know what's going on in Ventura. I spoke to my mom this morning and she said it's been pretty smoky and lots of ash and even large chunks of who knows what have been falling. She said the grass looks like it has a dusting of snow. She also said it's been pretty quite, sorta errie but feels safe. So far only Simi Valley has a fire and Santa Paul, Venura, Camarillo, etc are ok.

I hope this helps put your fears at ease. I have so many friends in San Deigo that I'm worried about but they all seem to be ok.

It's hard when you live far away!

I spoke to my brother late today and Santa Paula now has a fire I guess. Only about 15 miles from my brothers which is way to close for me.

I hope your and my family will be okay.

I'm in the San Fernando Valley and it is just awful what's going on out here. Everywhere you look it's smoky and ashes are falling. It's ugly. I really hop that the fire fighters can get it controlled(The winds are NOT of help!).

My brother put his pool cover on to protect it. He said it does look like it has snowed out there. He had a half inch on his cars I guess.

I hope you will be okay too!

Just heard about the Lake Piru area fire. Glad to hear your brother is doing well, let's hope they get this thing under control soon.

Hi, just got to the computer after four days away, camping w/ 40 7th graders. We were up at Big Bear Lake on Friday and were told on Sat. afternoon we had two hours to evacuate. It was precautionary only, as the Old Fire had just started moving. They wanted to get the area campers/visitors down the mtn in case the residents had to evacuate later. So we packed up and moved the whole group down to Lake Perris, near Riverside. Sunday at the lake we watched plumes of smoke, like cumulus clouds, rise thousands of feet in the sky to the southeast, from San Diego area fire(s). Then we could turn to the northeast and see smoke rising in those skies. Adults camping with us who got various reports said the mountainsides above San Bernardino at night looked like "a Christmas tree," all lit with fires.

When we arrived home at 5:00 today the smell of smoke was (and is) VERY strong, ashes are constantly floating down. DH's breathing is a little tight tonite (he has asthma).

In your thoughts and prayers, please remember those fighting the fires, as well as those who have evacuated (1800 people housed in hangars at the San Bernardino Airport) and those who have lost homes (over 400, so I hear) to this one of several monster fires in Southern Calif.

BTW, DH has been keeping up w/fires on this website: http://www.incidentcontrol.com/old/index.html

Thanks for that info, Dianah, I was worried about Big Bear! Hope the weather breaks and they get control of the fires.
