Back to school for a non-nursing degree?

Long story, short. After realizing and accepting the fact that nursing is not for me, I have come to the decision to try to pursue a career in speech language pathology. The classes seem much more interesting than nursing classes ever did to me and it's a career that is not as life and death as nursing is. Heck, I even managed to get into a leveling program for the fall semester to further learn about this career and I'm pretty darn excited!

My problem is that I have only been working as a nurse for a year and a couple of months and have just accepted a new hospital position in a new city. I will be working at the hospital as a nurse throughout school. My question is, how exactly do I explain to my manager that I am going back to school for a completely different career than what I am currently working in? I don't want to seem like I'm not serious about my job and that I don't care. It's just that after nursing school and working as a nurse for that short amount of time, I know that nursing is not the right fit for me.

Advice please?

Why would your manager need to know why you are returning to school? Be honest if asked, but no need to volunteer that information. Good luck to you, and I hope you've found your niche!

You have no obligation to say anything. If asked why you aren't available during those times, you could still say you have other commitments without disclosing that you're in school for something else.

I know several nurses that end up doing their MBA as opposed to seeking a masters in nursing. No harm done IMO.

I wouldn't mention that I am pursuing a degree in another field. Why do they need to know? Don't volunteer information.
