Anyone move from critical care to med/surg and like it?

Looking for some input. Anyone work first in critical care and then move onto med-surg? May have to make the move from ER to med/surg due to family issues. Thanks for any comments!

Uh no. I went from Med-Surg to Critical Care(adult ICU) 8 years ago and haven't looked back! I would NEVER go back to med-surg. Been there, done that.

Really? I have only worked MS and I think it sux, but I am scared to death of a critical care floor. I have floated to ICU a couple times and took over a few IMC patients. I liked that theey seemed to be fully staffed with decent nurse: patient ratios...but stil....critical care scares me.

I did Med-Surg for 3 years and was TOTALLY scared of moving to the high acuity area. My first critical care experience was pretty good and I was trained VERY well....once you get into it and feel comfortable it's not so scary! Maybe try going to a cardiac floor first and then move into critical care.

No and would NEVER consider it.

Have you considered alternatives besides M/S? Or is the M/S position the only schedule that fits your needs right now?

I give M/S nurses the utmost respect--- I couldn't do it. it takes alot to practice safely on a M/S floor.

This would be in a tiny critical access hospital. We are talking around 12 or so med/surg beds. The whole hospital is around 20 beds. So this isn't your typical inner city med/surg. This is the position that does fit my needs for now.

Ahhh, in that case, absolutely! Family, home always comes first for me... I do my 12 hour shifts and leave.

Actually, most of my almost 20 years has been some type of ICU environment. Last year, I moved across the country and took a travel contract in my new city. The one that I was able to secure was a cardiac tele floor a 1 to 6 ratio. I was dreading it and was completely suprised at how much I enjoyed it. Never thought I would enjoy a lower acuity unit. Even though I really enjoy the ICU environment, if this unit had been hiring at the time(ended up that average census was unusually low and they put a hiring freeze) I would have signed on in a minute.

M/S in any hospital, inner city or suburbs, can be tough.

It sounds like the hospital you are considering is a little piece of heaven right here on earth.

Itsounds ideal. Go for it if it fits your needs !!!
