2 careers at the same time.

Nurses General Nursing

Hello my name is Ashley I'm 21 years old and just graduated as an LPN in June 2016. I currently work at a nursing home 30-35 hours a week however in August I injured my back (physio says it a build up of pressure in my lower back that lead to 2 herniated disc) I got over my back injury but two weeks ago I re- injured myself when the old med carts wheels got stuck. Now my coworkers are telling me I should think about looking into a different career or doing LPN part time and something else part time.

Ive always liked the idea of being a education assistant and now that there is a casual position thats open I'm thinking about applying for it. However I'm also interested in Foot care course because of the high demand, good pay and flexible hours. Both jobs would be a lot easier on my back (I think)

my question is if there are any LPNs or RNs out there with two completely different jobs? Did you care about the cut in pay when taking your second job? Any advice at all would be very much appreciated!!

Ashley

You should consider pediatric home health.

Concur with PP. You can work with infants or toddlers, many times they are bedbound. If you were to get a night shift respite case, the worst you would have, as far as your back is concerned, is changing the diaper on the child. You could spend the shift sitting in a rocker keeping an eye on the patient. Not exactly earth-shattering, but you are giving the parents respite and getting a nursing paycheck for your efforts.

I just got hired to do pediatric home health care. Will let you know how that goes. Worked at a nursing home pt due to I help my husband as a self employed landscaper. So I do 2 completely different jobs. Nursing home wasn't happy that I wouldn't work ft or pick up many shifts even though I let them know prior to hiring me. The home health told me there was no minimum I had to work. We'll see if they change their minds too once I start to work. BTW my landscaping job pays more with a lot less stress.
