General Discussion about Filipino RNs currently working in the U.S.

World Philippines

Published

for filipino rns currently in the us whether still undergoing the proper documentations or already working please kindly share your experiences on this thread.

topics maybe from experiences at the workplace, impact of the new culture to you and your family, general do's and dont's, and others.

this thread would serve, hopefully, as a general resource thread for would-be u.s. nurses in the near future and to dispel myths and rumors and of course general advice coming from those already in the u.s.

Thanks for the much appreciated advices in getting license in CA. I was just a little worried about actually moving back to the Philippines in getting my degree and having problems getting license and job when I do graduate. I had a lot of disagreements with my friends and family about the move but I just want the life experiences that other places can offer, plus getting my roots back.

Now I just have to look for a good school to take nursing in Pampanga. I finished all of the requirements for entering nursing school here in Ca. Hopefully, the schools in the Philippines are more than willing to take those credit. Thanks again to all that shared their experiences.

I don't think they will credit your courses taken here. You will have to start from scratch but that is okay. Good luck!

wow very nice read! i read this from the 1st page up to the reply above ^^

guys i need to ask some questions when working in us particularly working in the hosp.

does anyone felt discriminated inside the workplace or inside the hospital? how bad?i am only 5’4 in height and is it going to be a problem inside to hospital? honestly i wish i was a little bit taller. all my brothers are like 5’7 and 5’8 unfortunately i don’t know why im this small. hehe. well i have to be thankful though because i have 20 fingers 2 legs and 2 hands very good eyesight unlike our handicapped kababayans and have dwarfism. im still conscious though because i know that we will be dealing with huge patients like 6’4 or bigger! i am a guy by the way. i really feel anxious every time my teachers tease small girls in our room because if there is an inscident that you have to carry your 6'8 pt and the girl is 4'11 that would be impossible. they don’t realize that a guy with 5’4 height is still asking for more height. hehe

i would like for you to elaborate on your first question about discrimination. are you asking about discrimination based on your height? any form of discrimination whether gender, race or ethinic background, religious affiliation or non-affiliation, country of origin, and things of that sort is against the law in this country. and that would include height or physical stature, of course. some nurses who have worked here in the us can probably give you anecdotal accounts of self-perceived discrimination. but like i said, if it's true discrimination, then this is not to be allowed and should be reported to appropriate channels.

about your height, that should not be a problem at all. i am tall at 5'11" and many nurses here never even think that i am filipino because of my height. but i have worked with many nurses male or female of all races who are much shorter than me in all the places i've worked in and i never witnessed any hindrance of their short stature with their job performance. transferring, repositioning, or lifting a patient who is tall and/or heavy should never ever be done as a one-person operation. not only do you risk injury to yourself but also to the patient. always ask for help from more than one nurse if you have to do something like this.

wow those were very encouraging words!! thanks! hhmm.. i am really really conscious about my height. i hope i can get over this feeling someday. maybe im just affected everytime i hear americans who talks " hey you shorty" "hey you tiny" stuffs like that. haha.

Wait till you get here and you will see Anglo-Saxon stock (Americans whose race came form Europe) who are below 5'4". Goes also with all the races here.

i didn't feel any discrimination at work at all. i stand 5'4", i am considered petite by people blessed with colossal bone structures..but i seen many nurses, filipino or not, that are shorter than i am. i got crooked fingers, but nobody said anything about it because it does not prevent me from doing my job. i seen many shorter male nurses, and doctors, and other people in non-nursing profession. when you work in the hospital, or any places here in the u.s., you cannot tease anyone just because they are short, ugly, or fat... that is what they call harassment.before you start working, you will read somewhere in your employee manual about all types of "harassments". no, you don't carry your patient on your own..that's why you have a backup persons to assist you. never ever feel sorry for yourself just because you are short. a 6'5" person can feel uncomfortable too, for being too tall! trust me, i seen it many times. goodluck!

thank you guys! ahh.. from now on ill stop thinking about it. hehe

i think this insecurity will be the hindrance and the height. haha thanks again!

rnhawaii34 thank you so much you really helped me a lot with this. -->a 6'5" person can feel uncomfortable too, for being too tall! trust me, i seen it many times. goodluck!

Everyone of my Filipino patients that I admit, the men are all 5'4"...standard height for many years in the Philippines as you well know.

We also have people from all over the world, as well as those that were from the US for generation after generation that are that height or less, and they are men.

Don't worry about.

...is the creditcard from this country(PHP) (citibank) used there in the US can vouch for my credit history?...honestly...i have good credit line in citibank..is it valid?

no.the credit bureau requires you to have an ssn. you need to live here and work here in the u.s. to establish that credit history. you might want to google " credit history" for more information.
