Anyone starting at GCC nursing program for summer or fall? Wondering if you have received any information other than just that you were accepted to the program?

Wondering if I should start calling people.....hmmmm......

:uhoh21: I know you are busy today, but wanted to say I got my packet today. It obviously conjured up a lot more questions!:uhoh3: I figure with this many questions I should either seek the aid of Kristina or the Nursing Dept. I saw Kristina yesterday though and she seemed to know very litte. I have questions on what books I need to get since there is a discrepency between what the nursing dept tells you you need and the books the bookstore is packaging up. How did you get your books? I also am trying to meet the financial aid deadline, but I don't think I will be officially registered until after the 30th, which will be too late for FA. I am sooo confused. Add on to that a job interview Wed! Well, maybe I can take my packet to Kristina and see if she can elaborate on some of the points I don't get. Do you recommend seeing Kristina or going to the nursing dept/calling Lillian?

Thanks for your help!:) I can't tell you how great it has been to have someone helping me with this!

Congrats! :balloons:

Does anyone in here know about any new nursing schools in Arizona with no waiting lists? I currently go to gcc and will be donw with ally pre-requsites this summer. I am planning on applying to pcc nursing program in june but I do want to wait. Thanks

Does anyone know of any good bio teachers at gcc? I am currently taking bio201 with jim brinegar and he sucks. I think I will have to take this class over in the summer? Any suggestons? I will also be taking bio202 during the summer2.

I took B202 with Brinegar last summer. I didn't appreciate his humor much and the lab was awful. He let in extra students so there was standing room only and you were lucky if you could see anything during the dissection. I think about 20% get A's.

As far as schools with no waiting, I think Grand Canyon is about the only one. The downside is cost, about $7500/yr.

Lillian will mail you a book list or maybe you can call and ask her. Here is one tip that I wish I knew before buying books. The Lewis book "Medical, Surgical Nursing" is a really thick book. It also comes in 2 smaller books (2 volumes). I would have definitely bought the 2 smaller books (makes it easier to carry). I don't know the answer to you FA question, but I would call the FA office to find out what you should do. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I have 7 tests in the next 3 weeks to study for. Hope this info helps. Talk to you soon.

Get the books that the nursing department advised. They are expensive enough without adding uneeded books! I started GCC this semester in block three and the books were about 500 bucks! I order them off the Efollet web link and have them delivered to my house. There were way too many books to carry out of the book store!

Good luck,

Thanks for the information Lu Ann and Glendale Student. I did get a list of books in the packet from the nursing dept, but also in the packet was a flyer from the bookstore stating that for approx $500 you could get all the books you need for Block 1 in two boxes. Problem is, the books on that list did not match the list from the nursing dept. Left me scratching my head because the nursing dept is who put together the whole packet, so go figure! It is like it is meant to confuse! I suppose I will start acquiring the official list.

Do you think you have to have the exact same edition? Older editions are obviously much cheaper.

Good Luck on your tests Glendale Student!!

I would say if you bought an older edition, you would probably be fine. As far as the workbooks go, the only one that I really use is the one for assessment , by Jarvis (this for me was the hardest class).

The good news is that you only have to buy 2 more books in block 2. I would also give Lillian a call and let her know the bookstore is giving you a different list than what she has given you.

Talk to you soon!

Well, what was weird Glendale Student, was that the bookstore flyer was hand packaged with the nursing packet, so someone had to have noticed that the books did not match!

Well, I am just going to buy them one for one right now off of the letter actually attached to the nursing packet. I will wait until I am atleast registered though. Thanks again for your help!

Just wondering....

Glendale Student and Lu Ann..............did either of you guys buy older editions of your books? I am shopping on Ebay and it is MUCH cheaper. I am scared to go with a slightly older edition, but I know that the odds it will be much different are very slim. Wondering what you guys did. Lu Ann..........I know you said you went thru Efollet, but my list has 16 REQUIRED texts, some of which cost 50-100 dollars new!!!:stone I am wondering how you got books for 500 bucks!

Do you think the nursing instructors will yell at me for getting an older edition? I know some students tried that for my CNA class and they got their heads bitten off.

I guess I'll call the Nursing Dept on Monday. It is just that they always seem so bothered by you....

I got all new books, mostly because I am very hard on books and if I use them more than one semester I usually break the binders. You will get used to the Nursing department ignoring you :rotfl: You can stand right at the counter and they ignore you there too. I don't mind that so much as being ignored in the lab when I need something and nobody is there for as long as an hour or more, friggin' waste of my time.

I think my books were less because I entered block 3 at Glendale. Are you entering block 1? I didn't need a patho book or workbook. I have seen block 3 students using older edition text books and never saw them get yelled at. As long as you are buying books, a Taber's medical dictionary is priceless. In block 3 you will also need a Merck Manual though it isn't on the official list.

Good luck, see ya around the campus,

Lu Ann
