GCC students??

Anyone starting at GCC nursing program for summer or fall? Wondering if you have received any information other than just that you were accepted to the program?
Wondering if I should start calling people.....hmmmm......

Hi, I'm a P/T student at GCC and I have a friend that is starting in the Summer. She hasn't received anything yet. I believe in your first packet you'll get a welcome letter and a health form that your doctor has to sign. You will also get a list of immunizations and other things that are required (finger print clearance and CPR card). If you don't have either of these, I would work on getting them now. Later you will get a list of books and a syllabus. You must register for classes with the nursing dept. They will send you 2 choices for your class schedule and clinical rotations, and you can also elect to take a couple of additional classes that they recommend. One is a math class for drug calculations that I highly recommend and the other is a structured review class that I'm taking, but I don't really think is helpful at all. If you are still willing, I'd love to know how the workload is in the PT program. I know it is challenging, but specifically I'd like to know if you are working and how many hours you think are doable.

I wonder why they call it the PT program when everyone acts like it is just as time consuming and difficult???

The PT program is not as demanding as the accelerated program or even the FT program. I work 40 hours a week and I am also taking patho (which I wish I had completed last semester), so work, study, and school is all that I really have time for, but it is doable to work F/T and go to school. The thing that is different in the P/T program is that you have more time to complete Assessment and Pharm and you don't start clinicals until the lecture portion of that block is completed. When you are in clinicals, you don't have tests to worry about like the F/T program students do. (A little less stressful, I would think).

I would say the 1st month is the hardest because you are adjusting and the 1st tests are the hardest because you don't know what the teachers are expecting from you.

The hardest part of the program for me is the amount of reading that you have to do each week. Some people will tell you that you don't have to do all that reading, but if you want to make good grades, I would say that you should, otherwise you will not do well on the tests. The tests too are different than any I have ever taken before. They require you to think and use all the information that you've learned so far.

I do really like GCC and they have a really high pass rate on the Boards. I'm sure you will be happy once you get used to the program. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Glendale Student, you are awesome!! Thank you so very much for getting back with me. Knowing that I can work FT if I have to eases a lot of the anxiety I am having about quitting my FT job. It just won't work because it is a M-F job. I am very bummed right now that I have to quit after 5 years, but I can't go PT there and you have to do what you have to do, right?

My plan right now is to quit my job one month before school starts....to get all my ducks in a row....and then actively look for another job after month 2 or so of the program after all the adjusting has set in. I have saved enough for that atleast!

I did call Lillian and she says that they have not sent the packet out yet. So I just wait. Maybe I'll see ya around! Good Luck to you!!

By the way, Glendale Student, if I have a chance to register for Patho at another college before my July nursing school start date, would you recommend I do it? I could get part of it over with before school starts. Patho is the only one I still have of the coreqs to take.

I don't understand why Patho is built into the nursing schedule on the website, but the other co reqs are not. Why is that? So, in addition to all the classes say, in Block 2, you have to add in English 201 or whatever? That part was confusing...

Well, I guess that depends on where you are planning on taking Patho. I've heard that the Patho class at Rio is really hard, but you'd probably learn the

material really well, which is really important. If you know your Patho well, you will do well in the program. Or, you can take it during Block I and II. The instructor for Patho at Glendale will also be your instructor for Block II and she is really, really nice. Have you finished with the other co-reqs, Eng 102, Nutrition, and Humanities? I think, but I'm not positive, you have to finish Nutrition by the end of Block I and the other 2 co-reqs before you graduate.

I will most likely wait then to take Patho at GCC. Yes, I have all the other co-reqs done.

Oh man!!! I thought I was gonna get that packet today and no such luck! :crying2: I am so bummed!!! I am so confused on this whole process. Was going to go down to the school tomorrow to fill out forms for financial aid and was hoping I would get all the details tonite.

Yes, I heard the same. Actually, I talked to Lillian, the nursing dept secretary on Tues. She said she was sending them out either that day or Wed. So.......I will probably get it tomorrow. I know she told me that she had 60 students to send packets to. I think that represents all of the PT summer program and FT fall. We'll see for sure maybe when I get my hands on that freakin' packet!! :uhoh3:
