Galen College

U.S.A. Kentucky

Just thought I would start a new thread about Galen. Anything and everything Galen can be posted here! Please feel free to share, or ask questions!

I am still waiting on my acceptance letter, and am going crazy:bugeyes:! Hopefully, I will be starting July 27th.:yeah:

Hi michelle. My efc was 800. I got pretty close to the maximum pell grant, that really helped alot. Hey, did you know about Nortons Scholarship program for the second year RN part? You probably do, but just in case you don't; they have an online application that you fill out and send in once you receive your RN class acceptance letter. They will give you $4000 a year towards tuition plus $2000 for books and living expenses. Galen is one of the programs that they accept for this program. The catch is though that you have to agree to work for them once you get out of school. So I did the math and you have to work for them for about 16 months to take care of the debt. If you don't, it becomes a loan that you have to pay back. I think that I am going to do that; it would be nice to get out of school and know you have a job anyways! Plus the second year is so much more expensive than the first. There definitely won't be enough grants or student loans to cover it!

Good luck to everyone!

I hope to see you all at Galen in July!:yeah:

I forgot to ask Michelle, will you be going to days or nights? It's good to know that someone older like us is doing the same thing. I will be 35 next week and my husband just turned 41. My real name is Sonya, by the way.

Hey Sonya, I have to attend nights since I have a full-time day job. I can't afford to give it up right now. It is going to be a busy 21 months (that's how long it takes for nights) for me but where there's a will there's a way right? I hope my EFC isn't too high to receive a pell grant. I don't think it is though. I will see when I meet with financial aid making that appt on Tuesday.

Good luck at your financial aid appointment Michelle. You should be fine! Good luck with nights too. All of your hard work will pay off in the long run!

Hello everyone and welcome slmcdo05!! I went away on a marriage retreat for the weekend and I swore off the computer and the phone:bugeyes:! So, you know it was killing me to not hear from you all. But, I am back now and CONGRATULATIONS ACORNE!!!!!:yeah: I told you, you were in there!!

Lasdrs07: You are next!! I know the waiting stinks, but "no news, is good news". And I am waiting to hear your good news:D!

To everyone else, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so excited about the growth of this post and I am looking forward to meeting you all July 11th!!

FYI: Whatever paperwork you have completed(physical, cpr certification, etc), you can turn that in to the registrar at the time of your financial aid appointment.

Hi Everyone!! And welcome slmcdo05!! Lasdrs07 I took my test back in February. I don't know anything about financial aid so any advice or input would be helpful. I did check into kentuckiana works but they told me to come back after my second semester!! I am afraid I won't get any help at all and have to take out loans to pay for everything. I am 43 with no kids and my husband has a decent job but he is in sales and due to this economny his sales have decresed and so has his takehome pay!! I hope that will be considered when I apply for aid.

Good Luck to Everyone and thank you for all your support and friendship!!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the welcoming posts. Acorne, do you know what your EFC is? You can look at the

results of your student aid report and see what it is. My EFC was 800 and I got the full pell grant amount and

I had to take out the full student loan amount of $10500. I will be getting back a little bit of money each quarter.

I hate taking out student loans too, but I really want to get my nursing education started! I know that the second year will be a lot more expensive, but I am planning on applying for the $6000 scholarship through Nortons hospital.

They will pay $4000 towards tuition and $2000 for books and etc, you just have to agree to work for them when you finish nursing school. You are only obligated to 16 months if you take the full $6000. If you don't work for them at the end, it just becomes a loan that has to be repaid.

Hey does anyone know of anyone who got into Galen, but didn't get through the background check? I don't have

good credit, so I am kind of worried. I read the catalog and it says that they check your credit and past work history.

So are any of you going to the day class? That's the class that my husband and I are signed up for.

Hope to see some of you there!

Also Acorne, just make sure that you follow the checklist and have everything ready for your appointment and it will go quickly. She scheduled 2 hours for us and we were done in 45 minutes. They also take your picture for

your student ID badge right after you finish your financial aid appointment. I made sure that I wore something nice and fixed my hair good that day; I don't want to look at an ugly picture of myself for 2 years!

I have no idea what my EFC is now, but I know it has probably changed a lot since I filled out my FAFSA. My husband got $7,000 just in over-time last year at his job and now he can't get any over-time, plus he isn't getting as many hours in as he did last year. I work at an elementary school and this Wednesday is my last day. So, I have no job after Wednesday. Do you think they will consider those things whenever I have my financial aid appointment? Slmcdo, I know what you mean about being worried about the background check. My credit isn't that great and also I didn't put down one of my past jobs on the Galen application because I only worked there for like a month and a half. I have my CNA license, but I didn't put it on my application either since I only used it for like a month and a half at the job that I didn't list. Do you think that will affect me starting classes once they run my background check?? Now I am worried about that after seeing your post about them checking past jobs!! :o I worry way too much about everything as you can see from my past posts on here...haha!

Lasdrs07, I can tell you that they want the information from your tax return(2008). So, the fact that your husband is not getting that many hours and you won't be working after Wednesday, will only have an effect for next year. They are not looking at the "here and now". Don't we all wish:(

On another note: What kind of shoes are you all going to purchase? I am a Nike Shox person and it is so hard trying to find all white. I bought some thinking they would be ok, but they have a little gray on them. If anyone else is buying shox or find some, please post where you got them from. Thanks in advance:)

Slmcdo05, I will be going days as well. Hope to meet you and the rest at orientation. My name is Shon:)

Hi Lasdrs07!

Me too, I am a worry wart! From what I read, it says that they are checking your credit and job history for the purpose of learning about your character. You'll be fine, you work at a school!

I really don't think that anything that is going on this year will affect your financial aid for this year; unfortunately. Our income is very low and we don't have a job right now either. My husband broke his knee at work back in October and has been off work since then. He is walking perfectly now, but he is having trouble finding a weekend job. Even though we are currently unemployed, we still had to take out the full amount of student loans. The financial aid administrator, Jessica Hasken, did tell us about something called WIA, the Workforce investment Act. It is some type of government grant that helps pay for school.

Do you live in Kentucky? You might get some state funded grants too! We live in Indiana, so we don't get any state funded grants.

If you want to see what your EFC is now, just go to FAFSA online and click on the View My Student Aid Report link. It will show you what you EFC is and it will probably tell you how much pell grant money you are eligible for!

Don't worry yourself to death! I think that all of us really want to get started with classes in July and we are probably worrying ourselves needlessly!

I hope that everything goes well with your financial aid appointment!

Hi Shon! My name is Sonya. Are you doing the CPR class at Galen or do you already have your certification?

What type of shoes do we have to have? Do you know if we are allowed to wear tennis shoes that are mostly white? I would prefer some comfy tennies!
