gaining licensure in CA

Published

I will be starting an accBSN program in Indiana in May and am planning on moving to CA upon my graduation in Summer 2005. I will take the NCLEX here, but what is my next step to be able to legally work in CA?

Thanks!

Wow...thanks spacenurse!!!

good information for me too! thanks!

Hi spacenurse,

You give good advice. I hope you can help me too. There has been a misunderstanding with me and my nurse recruiter. Now I'm screwed. I have at most a couple months to submit my fingerprint cards to the Cali BON because they only hold the other required documents I sent them for 6 months until I give them my application and fees. I haven't sent in my fees and application because I thought my recruiter was going to fly me to sacramento to do a walk thru live scan. I misunderstood and they said that they would send me to pick up my liscence when it was done and only when it was done. Now time is really running out. I've emailed the cali BON for the fingerprint application last month, but I never got it yet. I haven't sent in my application or the fees yet because I was thinking I would sent it with the fingerprint cards once they were done. Do you think that I should send the liscence edorsement application and total fees (application fee and fingerprint fees) now and then send the fingerprint cards in hopes that the cali BON will sort it and put it together when I mail it out. Time is really running out. What do you think I should do? Please help me.

jlnurse-

Have you tried calling the BON? (916) 322-3350.

I'm not spacenurse, but I think you should go ahead and send your application and fees.

It appears that four of your six months to get them the info they need have already passed.

Better get crackin'!

Hi bengalli,

Yes, I have tried calling the BON. I was on hold forever, so I just emailed the Cali BON. I emailed them re: sending the fingerprint application and re: my current situation which is how I found out that I have within 6 months to hand in the application. Ok, well, I will go ahead and send the application now. Thanks for your help.

I SYMPATHIZE WITH YOU. ON THE OTHER HAND I HAVE 2 MORE YEARS TO GO AND AM TARGETING IN. IN THE FUTURE. WILL IN. OFFER RESIPROSITY(sp?) FOR RN's FROM CA.? SORRY I CANT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, BUT DO YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO MINE? THANKS FOR ANY INPUT YOU MAY HAVE. GOOD LUCK, SINCERELY FROM NOR-CAL. BILL

Hi caterpillarman,

I'm Canadian. I don't know if you're referring to Indiana or India, but in either case, I do not know the process. You have to contact the nursing board of wherever you want to get reciprocity to find out exactly what you need. If you are thinking of going to Indiana, go on this site by location to ask people from there, but also go to the Indiana board of nursing website. Why do you want to leave Cali?

Hi,

I finally recieved the fingerprint application from the Cali BON. Of course they didn't send any instructions or a return envelope like my friend had gotten when she was in the process applying to Florida. Luckily, she shared her instructions with me. I don't know why the Cali BON is so difficult. I mean, if these applications are not filled out properly, then you'll be rejected and they keep the fees. The instructions to fill out the fingerprint applications on the BON website aren't even complete! This is such a hassle. I hope working and living in Cali is gonna be less complicated and that people there are more considerate and helpful.

Hi jlnurse,

Sorry you've had such a hard time. My experiences with the CA BON has been nothing but good. Maybe you've slipped through the cracks somehow.

As far as people here in CA being considerate and helpful and if you are speaking in regard to where you will be working, it's really no different than any other place. It depends where you go, there's good and bad no matter where you go. But in general, I think CA is a friendly, welcoming place.

If you decide to come to the SF Bay Area, pm me and I'll give you a list of some good places to work and places to be wary of.

Go get your fingerprints! Get them in the mail. Look at these adverse events as just a challenge to your smarts and knowing how to use the resources available to you. Know that you are handling it!

:)
