Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

I have found that my Excelsior Nursing ASN degree credits are so non-transferable that I am having trouble deciding where to pursue my next Nursing career move. I may to have to choose between Nurse Practitioner @ UCLA or my BSN at CAL State Santa Barbara. In fact the the credits are so transferable that I have several opportunities. When I go to work in my ICU RN Position at a Magnet Childrens Hospital where the pursuit of Education is put parallel with the Excellence of Pt care because Education enables RN to be that RN's. I have never ONCE had mention of My Nursing School, and the reason is simple.... Schools do not make the Nurse, the Nurse makes the Nurse, and that in and of itself is the most important statistic. I am just baffled on how much negative press that EC gets. People should be ashamed of themselves. The state of the economy has made a lot of prospective nursing students pursue alternative education because Moms and Dads need to put dinner on the table, and spend the rest of there night studying so eventually they can give there family a better life or have more of a stable career because family is more important. And maybe if we supported these people a little more instead on having to provide Statistics to someone who can look them up themselves, or picket/write letters in support of their education and ensuring they can have a license because some person at various States BON have nothing better to do than to try make life more difficult and more expensive for the very students rather than supporting and assisting them through this exhausting nursing education than maybe our world would be better.

I cannot provide you with any statistic but challenge all of the EC nasayers to come up with a better solution for all of us. And continue to maintain professionalism and integrity, and ensure that Pt care is the most important priority??

What is the latest update? Every sequence of events required to make it a reality is a percent times a percent.

In other words, if it requires 4 events to make it a reality, then assuming each probability is 1% to begin with:

Net probability = .01 x .01 x .01 x .01 = .00000001 or .000001%

If we can map out the events that are required in reality, then we can estimate a closer statistic. :nurse::nurse:

That's not the correct method for deriving probability. It's not even close.

What was meant to be a forum to provide support and information for those negatively affected by the recent legislative events in GA has been hijacked by an immature, nurse wannabee who appears to be posting here only to rub salt into their wounds. You should be ashamed, little man. Were you not taught anything about common decency by your parents?

Anyway, to all others on this forum: I apologize for having been sidetracked. Any future posts from me will be to provide information related to events in GA and will try to the best of my ability to remain helpful and sincere.

And as all of you probably know, HB-475, in its new and improved form has been approved by both the Georgia House and the Senate. It only awaits Governor Perdue's signature and will finally put this issue to rest. I think the compromise reached is a workable solution, and was told by a representative of the GNA last week that they and EC are working on a solution to the problem of how to provide clinical preceptorships.

But again as many have posted, RT is not listed in this new bill. The bill is not a compromise. This is exactly what the GA BON wanted. It really would be nice if the Gov didn't sign this bill. The BON is making this miserable for us to have to keep sending in affirmations of our schooling and experience. Just let the 1100 or so us in the door and worry about the future. Don't keep hanging us out to dry. It is getting old, getting tired, and coming to think of it, Do I really want to work for this board????

Maybe this explains the miserable pass rate, and other issues, at Manatee Community College School of Nursing. If this is their theory of statistics then can you imagine how they teach drug calc.

I agree that RTs need to be included. But the current legislative session has ended and this is at least a starting point. I think it is far from perfect, as RTs have been slighted and the amount of clinical hours required rivals that of students in traditional programs who don't have to take the CPNE.

Hopefully the imperfections can be worked out during the next session. What I do know for sure is that Governor Perdue supports this type of program. The next election is 2010, and it's possible that we could end up with a Governor who isn't quite as supportive. So in my opinion, it might be easier to try to have it ammended later rather than letting this year go by without some kind of resolution, even if it is partial.

In the meantime, I plan to try and become involved in making sure the clinical preceptorships (providing Gov. Perdue signs HB-475) are fairly easily accomplished, and plan to write more letters and e-mails. Some have mentioned that their employers may sponsor them. I think that's great, but what about those for whom that is not possible? I would really like to see some local schools establish a program for this; they already have it for RN re-entry students at Kennesaw State, as well as other schools. With the development of such a program with the involvement of GNA, GA BON, GA University System, and Excelsior, EC graduates could avoid problems like the hassle of finding a preceptor, finding a suitable facility, possibly having to get their own , and then worrying whether the BON would accept it as an approved clinical when all is said and done. This requirement must be consistent. I still think you should be able to accomplish it through your employer if you wish, but other options should be available.

Anyway, I think that the Gov should sign the bill because it would provide a positive outcome for the greatest number of people. RTs definitely have earned their place as far as I'm concerned, but that appears to be out of our hands right now.

I am with PMDC this fork in the road has sidetracked us from keeping on the focus on our task @ hand and that is helping our friends in GA.

Baldee, we totally have gotten your point. And your calculation of statistical probability is impressive. 0.000000008 is a very interesting number. There are over 50 RN's that have responded to this thread alone and they are all EC grads, that is no stastic that is a fact.

I have yet to understand your point by writing in a thread that is supportive for EC. It is kind of like yelling fire in a crowded theatre and joking about. It is unkind. If you really need to vent your opinions and statistics start your own thread. I am sure people will be happy to join the bandwagon.

Give hardworking people who are trying to work full time and support their loved ones a break!

helicoptergal,

If you think this thread is going to make any difference in GA law or any State law, that is desperate to maintain its financial solvency, then I'm shocked. Likewise, if you think a balanced reasoning viewpoint is counterproductive to mass cheerleading, then I would like to understand better. Giving false hope over rational and practical contingency planning seems counter productive.

I just wanted to see if there was anything behind the hoop and holler: and vindictive shallow arguments indicate reasonable evidence to the contrary.

As you wish though, I'll leave this thread which is not about a lone state, but a trend that usually begins in states like CA and GA (i.e interstate compacts). And this is not a lone incident, nor a minority of State organizational actions to impede EC credit validation. If you did well off EC in the past, you might acknowledge the change in environment; and not keep the EC marketing hype going, even in a telegraphed omen thread of the near future. This is for the benefit of your 'brothers' who would best be benefited by not joining EC in the near future.

For looking out for the best interest for the majority, I have never been so viciously attacked and verbally assaulted, even on boards like Yahoo run by stock brokers. Best wishes to all.

The point of this thread is to keep people affected by the HB1041 informed on the latest developments. Since this does not apply to you do everyone here a favor and please do not post anymore negativity. I am so tired of people coming on here and spouting off some bs. GROW UP! Everyone who did EC worked very hard and we are no less qualified than any other students. So please keep your opinions to yourself!

Anyone speak to the Governor's office yet regarding his latest opinion on HB-475? I know some of you guys don't support it beacuse of the omission of RTs and can't say that I blame you, but what about the others? You guys think he should sign it, and consider it a compromise with the thought that we can try for more next session? After all, there is no shortage of legislators who support you AND EC.

Having been a very small part of it, I can say that political activism in nursing works. Maybe not overnight, but headway has been made.

Baldee,

I have to disagree with your assertion that you were viciously attacked; on the the contrary, you are the attacker. All of your speaking in riddles and pseudo-intelligence has gotten beyond old. Why don't you spend your time doing something productive like studying and trying to complete your degree. In other words you handle your business and let us, the EC students/alums, handle our own.
