FY 20 Navy Nurse

Hello guys, congrats to all who were selected to the Navy Nurse Corps. To the nurses who are waiting patiently, stay positive! I'm a CVICU RN with only 8 months of experience. I'm also a fulltime online student for my RN-BSN degree, I'll graduate in December 2019. I have been in touch with a recruiter(she's very nice) since February about the process to get in as an ICU Nurse. I'm not a prior service member but I would love to serve as a RN . I was told that I can get started with my medical screening and get through MEPS while I'mwaiting for the FY2020 to come out in October 2019 and graduation. My recruiter won't be able to submit my package until I graduated in December. I'm currently doing my pre-medical screening and working on my credentials and background packages. The recruiter told me that the Navy always has ICU billets but I don't know if that will change because of the healthcare transition. I'll keep you guys updated

Hey Nels, thanks for starting a thread for the 2020ers! I've been talking to my recruiter since last Dec; I'm in acute inpatient psych but apparently there hasn't been any active quotas for psych nurses in the last 4 years so I might be credentialed as a med-surg nurse with psych experience if accepted (I was in CVICU for a very short time before I was like nOoOoOope) which is totes fine, the more skills the better I say.

My recruiter says end of June we shall be seeing how many active quotes are available for FY2020.

Are they counting your RN experience prior to your BSN? I hear the other branches only count experience after obtaining a BSN but not sure about the navy!

Hey MasalaC, Thank you for joining. I was told the FY2020 billets will be out in October. I heard the same thing about the RN and BSN experience but my recruiter said don't worry about it, the Navy has so many openings for ICU RN I should be fine. My primary department is CVICU but float to/care for MSICU patients. I passed my TNCC today, I will float to Trauma ICU as well in a few weeks. I'm a new RN and I love ICU expect Peds ICU ?. I think it's good idea that you're trying to get in as a Med-Surg RN, you can try to get into the ICU again to boost your chance for the Navy. Best of luck to you! Keep us posted.

Yeah I hope once late June comes around he won't be like WHOOPS MEANT OCT lolololol

Everything goes in turtle pace I fear I won't have any new updates to share until 2025 lol I was supposed to do meps back in Dec after getting confirmation from my recruiter, but once I got there bright and super early, they were like sorry you're not even in the system. I was like excuuurrrssseee me I am SO in the system, my recruiter told me! I dunno what happened but my recruiter apologized and I was like kk, imma go home and go back to sleep then. I'm ready to get meps over with but my recruiter is like I have forever, no need to rush.

UUUHHH I PREFER GETTING THE PAPERWORK DONE AND OVER WITH crying

You got balls of steel loving ICU the way you do. Not everyone is meant for that critical care life so I have no desire to go back, but hecka kudos to you ?

I think my recruiter would like me more if I remained a ICU nurse haha oh well, I'm hoping I'll get in regardless.

Updates from me: none.

Kidding. There's one. I have meps in a.... week... ish. Gotta drive to another state and stay overnight at a hotel and follow a bus to meps.

Apparently my recruiter *thinks* I can be credentialed as a ER nurse as a psych nurse? I asked can he confirm with me what specialties I can be credentialed as and so far, no response. I love my recruiter but sometimes I'm like. Hm.

I applied for some part-time ER jobs nearby accepting nurses with no ER experience but some experience in another field, so at least I'll have something to go by. No active quotas for psych nurses for over 4 years lol and med-surg is cool but ya know. Prefer ER if I can make it happen.

New numbers can't come fast enough. Finished my package just before they pulled all the np billets last year. Told my recruiter if it doesn't happen this year I'll be into other services.

Update:

My package was completed last week. I'm currently waiting for the recruiter to submit it to the Selection board. Last month, I was interviewed by 2 Navy nurses. The interviews went well and I received great feedback/advices. The last time I checked with my recruiter, they were only 5 ICU billets available. The process has been stressful but I'm really close. I don't know how the COV19 will after the selection board, commission, order and ODS. Be safe and wash your hands. I'll keep you guys posted. Let me know if you have any question.

Hey congratulations on completing your kit! Was wondering if you had heard back from the board/how long did it take for you to hear back? Thanks!!

Specializes in Critical Care.

@ckdb1995 My package was returned because my resume didn't include all my past employments even non-nursing. Also, all the colleges that I attended. FYI, Your resume should match your SF-86 (online background check). I'm hoping to make it to the June board. I was told that it can take 30 days to know about the board's decision. It's a stressful process but I'm praying and waiting. How far are you in the process?

@ckdb1995 BTW, I have been getting ready for ODS (Run, sit ups, push ups,& planks) eventhough I don't have a date yet. Plank!! Yes, you read that right; the Navy will change sit ups to planks for the PRT. Check out the FY2020 ODS dates. For me, if everything goes well. I might go to ODS in October 2020 or later.

Thanks for the info! I submitted my kit about two weeks ago, so it’s just been a stressful wait to hear back especially because it’s already June 1. Hopefully we both hear back sooner than later. Any word on how many slots they have left? I know this whole covid thing probably affected some boards too

Specializes in Critical Care.

That's great! Congratulations. Four weeks ago, my recruiter told me that the Navy added a few ICU slots. 14 ICU billets were left but that was between April and May. We might go to ODS together. According to your recruiter, what will you have to do after you have been selected? I just want to compare what I was told.
