Like I said in the OB forum-where I posted two videos I don't mean to come across as insensitive or judgemental, but it is something we all see daily!! Or at least where I work....

It's not insensitive to get burned out seeing the same things over and over. You try to educate but if people aren't receptive - you're talking out of your ass. The waste of time and the constant repetition of the same old drives you batty.
When I was in the ED my two greatest pet peeves were the parents who would bring in a terribly febrile child and when you asked when was the last time they gave Tylenol or Motrin look at you like you have 2 heads. Why on earth would any sane human being give their child Tylenol when you can wait for them to seize - it's so much more dramatic.
The other pet peeve was the female who presents requesting a pregnancy test - tying up resources and racking up a three figure bill she will likely not pay - all for a test she could buy a WalMart for $10. Once or twice you see these things and they get old - multiply it by years and you literally want to tear your hair out.

Some parents are just scared and stupid. No role models. No support system. Just afraid their baby is sick and is going to die. The clip was funny, and some parents really act like that. I guess in the busy ER, the trick is to try to turn the whole thing into a teaching moment.
Then the next time they bring the baby to the ER instead of the DR's office, they will have at least tried tylenol and taken a temp.

It's ok to be judgemental and insensitive when you KNOW the complaitant IS an idiot!
You just don't get to show it!
You should scroll to the one about "siezures"

Is that the one where the patient's allergies include "employment"? That's my favorite.

When I ask what their temp was and the person says, "He just felt really hot." Or, even better, "It was 101 or 102, we don't have a thermometer." Puh-leeze.
I've been told that ER pregnancy tests can tell right away if you're pregnant. No need for implantation, or even making it to the uterus. ER lab results will tell you anyway, how far along you are, and who the father is.
