I am interested in what is covered in the first semester of nursing. At my school it is called Fundamentals of Nursing. I will go on MWF for a couple of hours and then on TTR for about 5 hours for lab. How indept will the first semester get. I figure you have to learn basic skills like bathing and making the hospital bed. but how deep does it get. Do you do anything with needles or IV's. I would just appreciate someone kind of giving me an outline.
Thanks in advance,
Mary Ann

My first semester we just learned the basics. Handwashing, donning sterile gloves, enama's, wet to dry dressings, passing an NG tube, cleaning and suctioning a trach, making an occupied/unoccupied bed, transferring pts., foley cath, vital signs and basic assessments. Other than that it was filled with the history of Nursing and so on. No needles or IV's for us.
Enjoy your first semester!!!!!

we have learned in our lab class so far: drawing up injections form one or twon bottles, giving sc and im shots, cappillary blood glucose monitoring, spiking an IV bag, lung and heart sounds, doing a med pass, abdominal sounds, lots of assessment things and of course the vitals and a review of CNA skills. lots more to come still.

here are a handful of links to some of the fundamentals of nursing syllabi i've found on the internet. these may not be what are going to be taught in your program, but at least it is something for you to look at and contemplate. at the end i've included a list of the videos and software programs that are available to students at one of the local junior college nursing programs in the area where i live. many colleges have similar video libraries for nursing students.
